Question could brake work harm AMS control module?

Hi,

Sorry for the typo - ABS control module should be the title.

New to the forum and would appreciate any help with this question. I had front and rear brakes and rotors done on my '04 v70. I thought I was being smart having this done at a local place that had good online reviews instead of the dealership (Volvo had confirmed all needed to be done) to save money. When I called to find out about the bill, it was a few hundred more than I'd been quoted. I had to argue with a real %$#*& who worked at the shop to get the price down even $100. Ended up paying $1,177. When I picked up the car, he was a complete jerk again, so I thought I wouldn't be going back there. I took it on a trip the next day - VA to MA. On the way up, the front speakers started screeching - even when the stereo was off. 1:00am, they were hissing and popping and finally gave out. I wondered if the guy had done something to them because I can't tell you how pissed he was that I wanted to pay something closer to my estimate, but figured it was a coincidence.

A couple of weeks after I got back, the brakes started making a clunking noise. I took the car in to Volvo for diagnostics, and they said that the brake pads weren't OEM and were the wrong size. They advised me to take the car back to the %#*&% guy for warranty work. Right after that, the ABS light, check engine, amber check warning lights and brake failure message came up. I took the car back to Volvo before I took it to the guy at the lousy shop because I wanted to know if it was all related. They told me they were getting codes BCM 0052 and BCM 0070, that this wasn't related to the bad brake work, and that they needed to replace the ABS control module to the tune of $1,500. My question is, could the bad brake work have caused the ABS module failure? Or is it really just a coincidence?

Thanks very much in advance for any advice!

I doubt it is from the brake work. I think it is just Ironic that it happened.

I do not agree with them using non OEM parts. They should have used OEM parts.

You should be about to get it rebuilt if it is bad for about $150.00.

Tech,

Thank you. If that's true, you're right. It is ironic.

About the rebuild, I know nothing about that but would love not to spend $1100. Can you tell me more about what that means?

Thanks

If you are somewhat handy you can remove the module your self and send it out and have it rebuilt.
Here is a link to someone that rebuilds them.

The site even explains how to remove it.
