Usually if you give it a decent tap with a hammer it will just fall off.

I ordered the volvo special tool for the job...still waiting for it to come. Didn't want to fork out the cash for an air compressor, wrench, and sockets for this one job. Couldn't find anyone that rented a gun either. Tool was about $50...hopefully can make some money back on it if I should ever sell it on ebay.

It worked great! That puppy was on tight! Needed a 1/2" breaker with extension to pop loose. No way could an average impact wrench loosen it.

Hey tech

Just a quick question, I have read that if you are a tooth or 2 out, your engine will have a drop in performance. Is this a quite noticeable difference, or would you have to be an expert to know the difference?

I changed my belt yesterday and I' just trying to make sure all is right (had a hell of a time lining up timing marks when putting on the belt).

Thanks.

Depends on which way it is off. But usually you can feel a difference if it is off.

so here are
1) right hand camshaft timing mark,
2) left hand camshaft timing mark from in front
3) left hand camshaft timing mark from above and it appaears to me that the left hand is off by one tooth.
4) the crankshaft and I can't see any marks
5) the tensioner is at ambient , 70 deg F, but appears to way to the left.

On my car, the "M"" is not the timing mark. Look for a barely visible single scribed line.

okay. here is
1) r cam scribe front and top
2) left cam mark from top, it appears to be one tooth off
3) raised mark on crankshaft
4) what I believe to be the mark on engine, that little raised edge to the left?
5) tensioner is still way off

took the belt off and tensioner, did not remove crank pully

now I can see the crankmarks easier.
replaced water pump and will do belt idler pulley and tensioner now.

I expect to move exhaust canshaft back one tooth.

well i figured out that the timing marks on camshaft sprockets must line up with cutouts in the top cover. so they were right to begin with, but every time I tried it was off one so I moved the sprocket a little by hand

when I was moving the camshaft sprocket end they seem to be on some sort of eccentic.

Is there any way I could have messed that up moving the end around a little?

The one with the VVT? It will be a little pressure on it.

VVT on both exhaust and intake

I had to move them slightly counter clockwise and then forward clockwise to find when they actually stated to push against the valves.

The exhaust required more movement. Is there any way to have screwed up the valve timing by moving these VVT sprockets by hand?
