Default D5 Euro4 Swirl Flaps

Hi everyone,

My grandad has a 2008 D5 Euro 4 185bhp with the swirls failed, not only has the linkage between the actuator and the swirls have failed, but the actual arm which joins the swirls together has snapped so nothing’s happening at all! With the rocker cover removed, I’m wondering whether to reinstall new ones, or if it’s possible on this engine to just remove them and leave them removed? This vehicle has got a totally blocked DPF and I think this has been caused by the failed swirls; and it also has two dodgey injectors. The vehicle has got 247,000 miles on the clock and my grandad will not give up on it. I’m going to replace the DPF as I’m told the monolith is damaged. The vehicle has no throttle at all in drive, in neutral it struggles to rev but in drive it takes a while for it to even get out of idle! No warnings!

Any ideas much appreciated!

You will find that most members here are from North America and we don't get the diesels here.

So not knowing how your engine is laid out.... Are you able to post pictures of were the arms should be? The flaps if visible. Do the flaps move freely if you to to move them from where the arms attach?

Have you checked with Volvo to see if the arms are available on there own or if they only come as part of a larger/main part?

If the DPF is damaged it may be blocked which would block exhaust flow which could be the cause of the revving issues. Further bad injectors may be what damaged the DPF.

The arms seem to move freely. I cannot show you the swirls without removing the rocker cover. There is currently no DPF fitted to the vehicle due to me trying to find a new DPF. But I thought that if there is no DPF fitted then it’d rev clean but it isn’t. When it is in Drive, it will just idle if you put your foot down for a quite a few seconds before the revs pickup, and it seems to struggle to pick the revs up in when stationary too (as in park and neutral). The swirls have been replaced recently and I don’t know if they’ve been replaced correctly. But it had the swirls and the arm that goes to the actuator replaced. It should have a DPF fitted to it within the next few weeks
