Don't have to change them until they malfunction, rare. Keep in mind they are quite expensive. I was quoted close to $400/ea., and they would have to be ordered from Volvo. Good luck.
$400 x 5 = $2000!!!!!. That's more expensive than a new coil, distributor and wires on a small block Chevy in the good ol' days! For that money, I could replace all those parts, the intake manifold and put a new Holley carb on one! I guess I better bring in the whole neurosurgery team the next time I replace plugs so I don't damage any of the coil packs.
you must be talking about $400 to do the whole job at the dealership, I have replaced coil packs in my 960 and the coil pack cost me around $55 and we just replace all 5 in my friends c70 for $ 280 which is $56 each, so the pack are not that expensive and are very easy to install....but to answer you question NO they only need to be replace if a particular cylinder is misfiring!
