Default EGR problems.

Hello.

Can anybody advise me please? I have a 2 LTR. 2014 Volvo V70 Business Edition D4 which has served me me well for the past 10 years since I purchased it. The EGR cooler was replaced in 2021 after the engine check light appeared, and again in 2024 due to carbon build up in the valve and cooler. Engine check light came on about 6 months ago and the cooler was removed and cleaned. Check light came on again after about 60 miles after cleaning and after a thorough investigation it seems that the only cure is to replace the cooler/valve again but there is no guarantee that the problem wont reoccur. This is becoming a very expensive way of dealing with this problem!

I understand that carbonisation is a common problem with diesel engines especially if the vehicle is used for mainly local runs, although in my case the car does a 250 mile round trip every 8 weeks or so and
averages about 1000 miles twice a year on holidays.

My question is; have other owners experienced this annoying problem, and if so, were they able to deal with it without changing the EGR cooler and/or valve every 2 years.

Any advice will be gratefully received.

With thanks,

Chris Fountain
