Default Question about EGR DTC P0400

Hi there, I recently purchased '95 850 GLT vagon with 130K miles. Couple of days ago I got "check engine" light on the dash. Mine is OBD-2, checked codes - P0400 - EGR system problem. Do I need new EGR valve? Or some ports clogged? Anybody had it before?
Thanks in advance!

Normally, you can pull the EGR and clean it. I would use brake cleaner and small pipe cleaners. - AB

Default RE: Question about EGR DTC P0400

Hello BorisRX,

Greetings from Chicagoland.

As Mr. B1mmer has noted, you can clean the EGR valve. The owner's guide actually notes that it be cleaned at certain intervals. In some cases, however, people fiddle with EGR valve and it may not be connected to the correct port (my 850 has one EGR valve vacuum hose blocked with a bolt, don't know why but it hasn't affected the engine performance), so you might want to visually inspect it as well, it's to the right of the intake manifold.

If it's '95, I believe it also has OBD-I in the engine compartment.

Good luck,

JPN

Most likely you will end up pulling the intake off to get to the EGR.
Some have done it with the intake on but it is a Pita.
You can also clean the intake really good if it is out of the car.

HI,
JPN (Kanji), you said that there were a screw in the hose that goes to the EGR valve, what are the consequenses of not having the EGR valve connected.
I just found out that the 1995 850 had the EGR disconnected and a screws in the hose. We tried to reconnect the EGR but idle was very bad, so we put the screw back in the hose. everything seems to work fine.

Default RE: Question about EGR DTC P0400

Hi AJ,

I assume that people blocked off one of the the EGR valve hoses after having a problem.

The consequence would probably be increased NOx output from the tailpipe, due to elevated combustion temperature. This can be problematic if you lived in a region where emissions inspection is required.

EGR system routes part of the exhaust gas back into the intake, in order to reduce the combustion temp, which in turn reduces the production of NOx.

As far as my 850 was concerned, there was not performance problem I noticed with disabled EGR, but it sure looked ugly.

I hope this answers your question.

Thanks Kanji,
The weird thing about it is that it took almost 2 weeks for the code to reappear even if the EGR is disconnected. any idea why?
I will probably leave it as is until next spring, The bad thing is the check engine light will stay on. oh well....

Thanks
AJ

I did w/o pulling intake out- just had to turn the wrench upside down every other time I turned it..

I also wonder if it is possible to use a bent wire or something like that and to clean it from the opening in the air intake ?

See attached pic, the EGR valve is installed somewhere within the red circle, and is under the plastic throttle housing cover or under the intake. You may have to remove the intake manifold to get to it, in which case you'll need to have a new intake manifold gasket at hand, and I also recommend that you replace the EGR valve mounting gasket upon re-installation.

I will delete the pic within the next few days so be sure to save it in your PC.
