Engine Oil Use
This is a 98V70R, 130,000 miles, history unknown but thought to be abused.
I had the oil changed at the Volvo mechanic at about 128000, it went down about a qt by 130000. I added oil. When I next started the engine, I got a big cloud out of the exhaust pipe. It cleared quickly. I recently changed the plugs and although they were fully beat they didn't have a look that would suggest oil burning. I know this type of smoking pattern points to worn valve guides, but other than that one time it does not puff on restart hot or cold. Unless there's some reason not to, I am planning to change over to Castrol 20/50 next change and run that for the summer, 10/40 for the winter months. What was I seeing after adding oil? Is this the precursor to a worn out engine?
Thanks.

Now I'm scared! The puff of smoke only appeared the one time after having put in a qt of oil. Is there some way to figure out if the turbo's getting ready to crap out? I do not have any external oil leaks. The engine does not smoke under hard acceleration and it pulls pretty well. Will I get some warning before the turbo craps out or will I just be dead in the water. How major a deal is the turbo? Am I look ing at over $1000 for replacement? DIY job? Does the turbo have the wastegate incorporated meaning replace turbo and all is going to be OK?
Just keep an eye on it. The main sign of it going bad is the car smoking when at idle or slowing down.
Search around for a price for one they Vary.
I don't keep up much with prices.
