Default frustration

when i 1st got the v70 t5 it threw 2 codes. #1 cylinder misfire and the dreaded sas pump. did full tune up and deleted the codes. don't drive the car much so never noticed any problems after the tune up. thought the tune up fixed the codes.

well, took the car on a 300 mile trip (close to 500 miles later) and the cel light starts flashing. it now has a rough idle up to 35mph or so then, at 40mph or so it goes away and feels smooth.

stopped in at vatozone and had them check it and they tell me that #1 and #3 cylinder is misfiring and of course the dreaded sas pump.

how can this be? my tune up consists of spark plugs, spark plug wires, cap and rotor, air filter, fuel filter, both o2 sensors and even took the tb off to clean. didn't do the pcv 'cause i couldn't find one. i am suspicious of the cat converter but not sure yet. it is a '98. can someone please help out?

When you can do a compression test. You might also have clogged injectors.

You will need a compression tester to do the compression test.
Get a tester like this one. http://www.autozone.com/autozone/cat...andName=Actron

For the injectors you can pull the fuel rail and make sure the coil is disconnected and have someone crank the motor over and watch the fuel pattern coming out of the injectors. See if the #1 and #3 look different than the rest of them.

injectors are out being tested and cleaned and will know the verdict by 2morrow.

while they are out, should i be concerned about the fpr on the fuel rail? how reliable are they (stock)?

well, i spoke to the guy who is test and cleaning the inj. and he said they were a little bit on the dirty side but nothing major. nothing that bad to cause a misfire in #1 and #3 cyl.

i am going to replace the (probably fouled out anyways) plugs. i was checking in my owners man. and it list champion rc8pyp or equivalent. i could not find the champion rc8pyp plugs. found people talking about them but did not find the plugs themselves. think i have ngk in there now. don't want bisch plugs but if i have to then i will get them.

i gathered copper is the way to go. plug recommendations, anyone?

test results: TEST BEFORE CLEANING PRESSURE SETTING 3 bar
LEAK TEST> no M/S-RPM pass
SPRAY PATTERN> INJ. #1 fair FLOW RATE> 107
INJ. #2 good FLOW RATE> 105
INJ. #3 good FLOW RATE> 104
INJ. #4 good FLOW RATE> 104
INJ. #5 good FLOW RATE> 104

TEST AFTER CLEANING PRESSURE SETTING 3 bar
LEAK TEST> no M/S-RPM pass
SPRAY PATTERN> INJ. #1 fair FLOW RATE> 107
INJ. #2 good FLOW RATE> 105
INJ. #3 good FLOW RATE> 105
INJ. #4 good FLOW RATE> 105
INJ. #5 good FLOW RATE> 105

i installed the injectors along with new denso Q20PRU plugs gapped at .028-.029 and test drove the car. accelerates better but still has a bit of a misfire feel to it. did not throw CEL light, yet, but i expect it to sooner or later.
i pulled the injectors and #'d them 1-5 as i pulled them from timing cover to dizzy. the #1 injector stayed the same. could it be a problem?

It is possible. Have you done a compression test yet?

See if you can find a compression tester to borrow and it will be easy.
If you can change the spark plugs you can run a compression test.

sort of good news. i have been messing with some of the bad vacuum hoses and left the bat. disconnected to clear the cel. light. put everything back together and test drive until the cel light comes back on and pop into the vatozone to check it. it comes up #1 misfire only.

on my injector test results that was the only injector that did not change. so my guess for now is that the inj. is bad.

any thoughts?

That is possible. See if you can find a used set to drop in there to test with.
