Default fuel pump

hi all,
took my car in to be fixed and they say the fuel pump is bad. huge cost to fix. car was running great last week. Are these the kind of parts that suddenly go bad or do they typically sputter for awhile. any suggestions they may have overlooked?

Well my pump had to be changed last year but no it did not die suddenly however I think they can. It's a 700$ part but my shop does this thing where they cut a hole out of the floor under the rear seat to save from pulling the rear suspension. They fold back a plate that they cut 3 sides out of under the rug and then seal it up after with silicone. It's a 10 year old car and the job saves like 500-700 in labour and gives me an exact port incase I have to get in there in future.

you can probably save some money on the part through one of the import part wear-houses
