Default gas gauge on 98 XC?

hey people

Gas gauge on my 98 cross country is not working properly. Today I coudnt start the car and I realized that it might be out of gas (even though it shows half the tank), I put few gallons in and it started right up. How can I get this fixed, is something lose somewhere or sending unit needs to be replaced or..?

I would say bad Sending unit.
Entire sending unit with Fuel pump.

And you have a AWD so Be prepaired to pay alot of labor.
The Tank needs to be dropped to replace it.

I started the project myself but I didnt know that it's pita job. It's too late to go back now.
Anyway, I dropped the one side of the tank down and then I realized that I got to take shaft out, part of exhaust so I can get the other side of the tank down. Once I do that and take sending unit out how can I determine if it's bad? Are you saying that I cant buy a sending unit separately from fuel pump?

thanks for your help!

That is correct. You have to buy the entire assembly.

You will have to drop the other side of th eTank as well. The sending unit is on the Passenger side.

You will have to make a tool or something to get the lines loose as well.

Have dropped my tank a couple of times now. You don't have to disconnect the driveshaft - just unbolt the plate holding the center bearing and that will provide enough play to drop the rear end down to where you can get at the unit. Can't think of any other shortcuts, but it's pretty straightforward - after you've done it the first time anyway.

That's what I was trying last night -just to get enough room so I can see the opening and take the unit out.
@tech, I've searched online and see that some of these parts stores are selling sending unit separately, I am little confused now.
Also, what is the most common reason for sending unit's failure? Can it fail if you just run of gas? Can it recover at all? Mine was working but not properly. When empty it shows half the tank, when half full it shows full and when full shows full also.

They just wear out from Age.
No they won't go bad from running out of gas. The pump would burn up.

No it won't recover either.

The Pump is inside the sending unit.
From the Dealer it is like $350.00 for the part.

If you see a picture it should look like a funny Angle thing.
