Hi. '98 V70 GLT, lo pressure turbo. 206,000 miles. no engine or trans work other than regular maintenance. serviced on scheduled intervals. 90 miles a day mixed driving on commute.

historic avge gas mileage 23-24.

check engine lite comes on a lot. recently gas mileage fell (overnight) from 23+ to 14. obviously injecting too much gas. unburned gas smell from exhaust, smoke, black soot on bumper around tailpipe.

serviced it - replaced air flow sensor. Mileage returned to normal for 3 tanks, then went back down to 14. serviced it again, did air pump, some other sensor, cleaned front and back O2 sensors, cleaned vacuum tubes. mileage gradually improved to 21. still runs rich and rough at startup, but smooth on highway. plenty of power despite rich fuel metering. dealer is stumped. as i said, check engine goes on and off of its own accord.

anybody have any thoughts or suggestions as to how to fix the fuel metering? otherwise car totally dependable. in 206,000 / 10 1/2 years, has always started and been reliable. service now starting to be death by a 1000 cuts on small stuff not affecting basic performance.

I know my V70 has recall on the fuel sensor....You gas mileage is impressive..I get about 21 miles to the gallon but I think i need to lay off the gas at the two red lights between my home and work.
