How to replace rear brake pads on a 1998 V70?
Can anyone help me?
I have just changed the front pads on my 1998 V70 and moved onto the rears, but they are unlike any caliper I've seen before. For a start the brake hose isn't flexible so I don't see how I can remove the caliper to compress the piston and get the old pads out. The only mounting bolts I can see are 2 on the rear that attach the caliper to the hub carrier, do I need to remove those and just hope there is enough give in the solid brake line? It seems dangerous to go down that route to me! All the previous cars I've worked on have had the same design (albeit smaller at the rear) calipers front and rear.
Any help gratefully received!
Richard

The bolts behind the caliper are the ones you need to remove to get the calipers off. Spray them down with PB-Blaster or something. They can be a real bitch to get off. Don't really know about the brake line. I've never had any trouble getting mine off. Could be that somebody replaced your brake lines with solid lines. You may have to remove the brake line.

You can take the calipers off and leave the brake lines hooked up then. I have done it numerous times. Broke the bolt off one time trying to losen it though. That's why I remember it so clearly. Had to remove the entire unit to ge the bolt backed out.

If you are only changing the pads. Tap the pin out that holds the pads in and slide the pad out.
Use a pair of channel locks to compress the caliper.
All of the 850's and S/V 70's have metal lines to the rear calipers.

Where do I find the pin? Is it accessible from the outside of the caliper or the inside?
Also, I'm nost sure what channel locks are, is there another term for them? I'm British if it helps, maybe we have a Spanner/Wrench situation!
Thanks for the help.

I broke a bolt on a Saab 900 a few years back, on a Sunday afternoon. All the parts shops were shut, so I trawled a scrapyard and got one off a Vauxhall Cavalier that happened to use the same braking system (the cars are the same underneath).
It's a pain in the butt when it happens!
Cheers,
Richard

Channel locks are the Big pliers with the curved jaws.

Brakes are pretty simple if you have the correct tools. When I have to replace the brake pads on my Volvo, I always use a large C clamp to compress the piston, but before I do that I take an empty 8 oz. hand sanitizer plastic container and use the pump to remove enough brake fluid from the master cylinder so I can compress the piston without making a mess. You can view the fluid to check for debris and by replacing the pump on the container when you are done, you have a neat disposal unit and no mess!
