Default HU-803 Head Unit Replacement Problems

Hey all, I just bought off ebay a refurbished HU-803 for my '01 V70XC. I was under the impression I was buying the gray version but when it came, it was the black version. My understanding is this was changed in the 2002 model year. I called the seller and he said he has Gray ones in stock if I want one, and would gladly exchange it if I want to, but in his opinion, the Black ones are more reliable, ie newer design. Is there any truth to this? He made it sound like a Gray one is almost certain to fail again.

I decided to install it in the car just to test and I found that certain features stopped working that worked previously...

1) Steering Wheel Audio Controls
2) Button Backlights and/or Dimmer...The main display works but at night it's very bright and none of the button lights come on.
3) It's extremely bassy. I have to turn the bass almost all the way down to get it to sound normal. At mid level it distorts the speakers.

Question is, will the software update at the dealer fix all these issues? Or should I just exchange for the unreliable gray one and hope everything starts working again? I called the dealer and they said there's an "audio control box" or something that could have failed, but they won't know that until after a software update attempt has been performed. This dealer has tried to scam me before over an oil leak (said it was a cam seal and rear main seal...when it was a oil cap in reality), and I have no reason to trust them.
