Default Lemon?

Hello! I am a new user to this board, but have owned Volvos for a long time. My wife (before I met her) bought a V70 (non-turbo and US-spec) directly from the factory. It has burned a LOT of oil since new. Dealers in Germany and the UK, as well as Volvo NA all say that this is "normal"

About 2 years ago, we replaced the first burnt valve...very, very expensive. Since then, we have replaced 2 more valves and are now replacing a main seal. The car runs rough, and burns a quart of oil every 200 miles or less. We can't really sell it in good faith, and will probably just end up selling it for scrap value since the engine it has is not easily avaiable (used) here in the UK.

Anybody have similar problems?

Very unusual. None of my S70s burns even a quarter of a quart of oil in 5000 miles.... There must be someplace in the UK where you can pickup a used engine in decent condition...

I have an 01 V70 HP Turbo, and use about a pint between oil changes. 200 miles is NOT normal!!! Do you have documentation that you complained of oil useage at this rate when the car was still in warrenty?

Thanks for the response. At one point last year, we parked the car and were waiting for a used engine. The big problem is that most 2000 V70's here use a 10-valve engine. Ours is 20-valve. Our mechanic tells us they are incompatible.

We have lots of documentation. Even with that, the local Volvo dealship, Volvo Corporate and Volvo North America all tell me that the oil comsumption is "normal". Now it is way out of warrenty and I am convinced that the problems we are having are because of whatever is causing the oil consumption. Trouble is, while eveyone agrees that the burnt valves are abnormal, noone is trying to find the root cause of the problem.

Guess we will run it till it dies again, then scrap it. Too bad, because the car is in excellent shape.

One last shot since Volvo Corp. is not owning up to a lemon (my opinion). Does this car have to pass a smog check? Most state laws require the manufacture to be able to pass this check up to a certain number of years. I'm not all that informed on this subject, but really feel you are being handed poorly, and this might be an edge to get a response. I wish I could be more helpful, it seems this is all based on "opinion", and mine is just as good as anyone's elses! I hope you can do some research on this and this might help.

Thanks for the response! Unfortunately, this car has passed every emission test it have undergone. I cannot use that against it. I do know that the difference it quality of the "old" 4 cylinder engine and this 5 cylinder is remarkable.....never again!

I have owned both the old B20 engines (had 370K miles) and the newer 5 cyl engines (a paultry 91K miles), and have no issues with either. You have a lemon, and I am very disssapointed you can't resolve this with Volvo. My faith is shaken. I wish there was moreI could do, but I'm thoughtless.....
