Default Need 2001 V70 T5 advice

Hi all ! I'm new to the board, just brought home my first Volvo last night, a 2001 V70 T5. I'm amazed at how fast it is for a wagon !

I'm hoping to benefit from everyone's experience. The car has 43,000 miles on it, so 5000 miles and 8 months until she is out of warranty. I'm wondering if I should go ahead and pop for an extended warranty, or take my chances without one. I know they won't cover normal wear items, so I assume the only benefit would be a significant catastrophic type problem.

More facts:

The warranty is about $2500.

I'm a BSME who has done everthing automotive except rebuild an auto trans.

Actually, the car is for the wife, so minimal downtime is required. Looking to keep the car at least 48,000 more miles.

Questions I would like advice on:

Have the V70 T5's been known to give major problems, and if so, what ?

Should I get the extended warranty ? (Information supporting opinion valued greatly)

Any other advice ?

Thanks in Advance for sharing your wisdom !!!

Having worked at the dealer, I recommend against an extended warranty. usually no worth the money.

especially if you have some skills behind a wrench. These cars are pretty solid if you change the oil regularly and drive moderatly.

I can say this. I have a 2001 T5. I do like it very much. It is stock other than IPD Free Flow exhaust, and better brake pads. I have not beat on this car and serviced with Volvo up to 50,000. Now at 60,000 I have major transmission problem, that the mechanic said might have beena result of the transmission fluid not being checked. Who was supposed to do this on scheduled services? Volvo. Can I prove they did not? No. Result? I have to buy an $1100 part for the transmisson plus labor. Perhaps that extended warranty is sounding very good. Love the car, buta new Volvoshouldnot be needinga major transmission job at 60,000.

Looks like you are not alone I have a Volvo V70 D 2001 with 54000 miles and a full Volvo dealer service history my warranty expired jan 2004 and when it went to service last week I asked them to check a noise. They came back with the clutch needs replacing £700.00 including the service This didn't change the driving or fix the problem, had the old clutch checked - nothing wrong with it so I made them put it back - but didn't get all my money back - the Volvo dealership was really rude & unhelpful - Volvo uk wasn't much better as the dealers are all franchise - so I took the car to another Volvo dealer - they said it was the brakes and disks and they charged me £50.00 for looking. Still got the noise and its comming from the transmission or gear box - sounds like a bearing is comming apart. Where to now? Brilliant car speedand comfort but service after 3 years - forget it, - better off with a banger!!!! The mess that Harratts Volvo left in the car was so bad I could of cooked chips in it!!!!!!!

I have a V70 T5 2000 model, this is my second volvo had 850 t5 previously. I had to replace my auto/trans after 105,000 Klms. that the only issue I have had. Luckily I had extended warranty, had 10 days to go, and they honoured the warranty.

My experience here in the States is that the warranty is quite sketchy! After the first three months, Volvo will not repair squeaks, rattles, adjustments, and the like. I certainly would not opt for paying for an extended warranty when the original is so poor.

I would, Abs Module-$ around $1000, Throttle body-$800. Those are 2 basic things that usually go bad with these cars. They Are expensive to fix. Plus warr will pay for many other problems, should they occur.
