Default new car

Hello all, I am looking into buying a new(used) wagon. Ive come across a2001 v70xc with 197,000 miles on it .The dealer wants $4500. The body is in excellent shape, as well as the interior. I looked under the hood and there is some kinda fluid leak under the serpentine belt. The evidence was on the right axle boot and surrounding area. Im guessing oil. It also needs a new upper torque bushing. I will be test driving the car this week, and the dealer said he would look into the fluid leak. I guess they just got the car and are in the process of getting it ready for sale- They arent listing it in there inventory yet. So if everything is good mechanically, is $4500a good price? It seems high to me for so many miles, but kelley blue book says its worth more. anything I should ask about the car?
Thanks
-Ed

In general but especially over 100k, I'd want to see comprehensive maintenance records in addition to a really clean looking vehicle.

On top of that, personally, I would steer clear of '99-02 MY S/V70s because of high incidence of ETM and transmission issues; especially at that mileage.

If it's had the ETM replaced w/Xemodex module, the trans has been replaced or overhauled recently, and it's as clean as you say, then I might consider $2.5k.

Nice try, but you can offer $2500 all day and they will laugh. I've sold hundreds of 99-02Volvos and they are great vehicles.

Man, who are you kidding? They probably gave $1,200 for it unless they were trying to jack the price up on the car they sold. Then they may have make it look like more on paper. A car with nearly 200,000 on it and what is likely a cam leaking, they'll take whatever someone is willing to toss at them fast. I doubt they'll put $800+ in it to fix an oil lean near the timing belt. That's why they have it priced a little above trade in.

I would guess that you could find a lot of nice Volvo's with 200,000 on them for $2,500 to $4,000. If they don't have maintenance records in the glove box, it's likely the car hasn't been serviced as the schedule recommends. What did the tbelt sticker say? Look in the 850 section, the buyer's guide link and go from there.

The etm has a yellow sticker. How do you know if it is xemodex?

If you saw a yellow sticker, it probably said "VOLVO" and it's not xemodex. The xemodex sticker is white and should be on the same surface but off towards the side.

the oil leak was cam seal. they replaced it along with the cv shaft the oil was leaking on. the oil put a hole in the boot. what typically would cause the seal to leak?

I te t drove the car and it lacked power. The dealer aid they could not lower the price becau e of all the repair it needed and that when they do li t the car it will be priced higher than the price they were giving me. orry, my girlfriend tipped a cup of milk onto the keyboard and now the letter between a and d doe not type- i will u5e the nimber 5 in it place. I looked at 2 other car ye5terday. the fir5t wa5 a 02 xc70 w 156000 mile. it look and drove pretty good.plenty of power. the da5h 5ay5 5a5 airbag. the dealer 5aid the light came on after they replaced the 2 front 5eatbelt5. he 5aid it ju5t needed to go to volvo to have the code cleared. The car i li5ted at $5990, and they would take my car and $4500 for the 02.
I left the dealer with the impre55ion that I would take the deal once he had the code cleared, though he tried to get me to take it a5 i5 explaining that it would probably only take me a few minute at the volvo dealer5hip to have done. the neare5t volvo i 60 mile5 from me, 5 mile5 from him... I'll let him do it.

After I left that dealer, I drove pa5t a dealer5hip who al5o had a volvo on the lot. a 98 v70xc-very clean. I went in5ide to inquire and found out that it only ha5 75000 mile. They are a5king $6650. and would take $5000 and my car for trade. I plan on te5t driving it thi week. It 5eem5 like a better deal than the 02, a5 long a5 everything i5 a5 good in5ide a out5ide. which one would you take?

I like the '98s but it is 5 years older. You could have the 1st place put in writing that they will pay to have the srs fixed if it doesn't reset. Those lights do pop if you change the belt without disconnecting the battery first. That was just stupid of them.

If the '98 is still awd, maybe I would give them $5,500 if the timing belt is recently done and the dip stick is not smoking.

Have you checked the buyer's guide for the 850?
