New (to me) V70 5 speed manual, slipping.
Hi there. I recently purchased a 98 V70 5 speed that was already slipping so I bought it knowing the clutch was on its way out. It will slip from reverse to first to 5th. It is a non turbo. Can anyone point me in the right direction as far as buying a clutch kit for this car? A list of what I need to change would be good too. (like when changing the timing belt one would also change tensioner and water pump, which I wouldnt know unless I was told) Thank you all in advance for any help.
Also, I'm not used to the whole 5 spd Volvo yet so a couple of times I tried starting it in first without pressing the clutch and it tried to start. Don't these cars have a neutral safety switch, or clutch pedal position safety switch? If so, where is it and is it a simple fix? Thanks!!!

You need a clutch kit. It should consist of the clutch disc, pressure plate and throw out bearing. It may or may not include a pilot bearing. Depending on it's condidtion you may also want to machine the face of the flywheel. It's like a brake rotor and pads. Over time the friction disc will eat into the face of the flywheel and can make it uneven or scored. It needs to be flat and smooth to function properly and allow it to engage smoothly and to have the capacity to hold all the horsepower without slipping.

Hi there and thanks for the reply. Would you also know anything about this car having a neutral safety switch or clutch pedal position sensor etc? This one will start in gear and I cant find anything about it online. Thanks!!
I would have said it positively has one since everything I've worked on does but I can't find it in any of the parts lookups I did and this thread for the 70's which is pretty much just a newer 850 says there isn't one.

I wouldn't believe just one thread but that and the fact I can't find a part .... I'm guessing it doesn't have one.

Hi there, and i apologize in advance for necroing a thread but i wanted to confirm that this car has NO neutral safety switch installed from factory as per atlanta volvo dealer. Who would have thought, volvo, the safest car manufacturer in the world passed this one up. I have installed a new clutch and i am very very happy with this car. It runs like a swiss watch, no ticking or other weird sounds. I am having an alarm installed with remote start and the tech is installing a safety switch on the clutch pedal along with the shifter to avoid starting in gear wether remotely or physically. Thank you for the replies!.....

It is easy to figure out.
When you start the car do you have to have the clutch pedal pushed down to allow the engine to turn over? If so then the car has a clutch switch. If not then you likely do not have one or perhaps someone has by passed it.

I took it to the dealer and the tech said there is no safety switch on this car. Before the alarm was installed I could start the car in gear without pressing the clutch. Big problem for someone who has driven big trucks for some time of his life. I would always use parking brakes and leave them in first. Any truck or car for that matter. But this one threw me off. I would have never guessed Vovo would not put one in from factory.

Perhaps Volvo gave/gives their customers credit for having some intelligence that they would not try to start their manual trans car without pushing the clutch down being in neutral.

I've done it a few times, and it gets your attention when the car jumps.....I drive a truck too and have never tried to start a manual transmission truck without depressing the clutch pedal.

there is a clutch pedal position sensor. it is about $70. it's not the money. they are a nuisance. be happy yours is bypassed. they fail intermittently and you will pay for a tow only to find out that it works when it gets to the shop. there are no codes so the mechanics scratch their heads and start replacing everything. i would like to know how whomever you bought the car from did it. btw - that would deactivate cruise control - if you care about it.
