New timing belt, timing problem...

Default New timing belt, timing problem...

So after searching forum, I installed new timing belt on my 04 v70 2.5t without a hitch.

I havn't started the car yet since I'm doing some other work to the vehicle.
I was just told that when I changed the TB, I was suppose to lock the cams as they are vvt.
WELL, I didn't lock the came unfortunately because I didn't read about it in the research I did.
I know for a fact that both cam gears moved a bit independently while making some attempts at putting the new TB on.
Now I'm not sure what to do. All marks still line up as prior to arrival. Is there a way to reset the cams? Does anyone suspect a problem? -Rob

I would suggest that you turn the crankshaft clockwise a couple of complete revolutions by hand, then an additional 90 degrees past the point where the 3 timing marks line up, then turn it back counter-clockwise 90 degrees, and make sure all 3 marks still line up. My understanding is when you turn it back 90 degrees it unloads the vvt cams.

Do this with the belt on?

I'm wondering if VVT only goes if you loosen the actual cam gear from the camshaft.

Only doing a belt you do not need to lock the cams. As long as the timing marks are lined up you are fine.

Are you serious? How do expect the marks to realign themselves with the belt off? The belt connects the pistons to the valves. You rotate the pistons making sure the valves remain timed properly. If you rotate without the belt, then you can expect the valves not to move at all.
