Default Possible fuel pump?

Okay people I need your input and feedback. For the past few weeks, my car (i.e.: 1998 V70 GLT) had been intermittently shuddering/stuttering under acceleration. Well, today it won't start (i.e.: run or drive). It will crank but seemingly won't start (i.e.: the engine rotates) as if it is not getting enough fuel. What are the precursors to fuel pump failure? What's the possibility it (i.e.: the shuddering/stuttering) being something else? And has anyone installed a fuel pump (i.e.: Walbro, Ebay special, etc.)other than OEM?

Spray carb cleaner in air box and see if it starts. This will help narrow it down to a fueling issue.

Smack the bottom of the fuel tank while someone is trying to start it, if the pump is bad, this will fix it temporarily. I've used this trick to get a car back to the shop more than a few times.
