Hello, How many miles are on your "NTY" 2005? Is the transmission fluid clean? It should be red and not smell burned. The 3309 fluid in the 5 speeds doesn't smell "pepperminty" when new. It does smell mechanically dull though. Suck out a sample of power steering fluid and see if it's brown. It should be a nice clear pale green. Brake fluid and coolant need love too. A check of your cabin air filter can make you feel better. Do you have the more basic AC or the fancier one? There are two different cabin air filters-get the right one. What were your minor fixes? I put Volvo mudflaps on mine and I'm glad I did. Remember: Synthetic oil helps keep the PCV (breather) system cleaner than regular oil. Kira

Hello, rspi (and everyone else)- I am going with the universally lauded cleaning effects of synthetic oils. More of the stuff which can precipitate out of mineral oils and create deposits is simply not present in in the "triple distilled" synthetic products. As far as the 850's breather system goes; I'm not certain. I think there's a flame trap in series in a rubber hose on the front of the engine. It's a maintenance item because it fills with gunk. I don't know if there's a box under the intake manifold to direct collected oil back into the crankcase as in a V70. Kira
