Default RE: timing belt post

I just bought a 2001 V70 w/ 138k miles on it. The carfax report does not mention a timing belt replacement but it does show regular maintenance from dealership. How do I know if the timing belt has been replaced?

I'm coming up on 140k, do I need to think about replacing it now?

I would. Most likely it has been done once already.
I would inspect it ASAP.

You'll also see cracks right away if it's time. If it's 20-40k old, it'll be nice rubber with no cracks or missing teeth.

Thanks Pinner, I'm going to assume I will need to bring it in to a mechanic for inspection as I can't even find a paper repair manual anywhere anyways.

All you have to do is pop the top black cover on the engine up some on the passenger side to see the belt.

I did what you said, Tech, and though I could only see a few inches, it looked very smooth. It looked nothing like your picture.

I bought it from a Volvo dealership and they spent a day and a half performing maintenance on it before I picked it up, is possible they replaced it or it was replaced not long ago. I'll call the dealership on Monday and see if they have any records on it.

Hopefully they did it already.
Let us know what you find out.

Have you looked around the engine bay for a Timing Belt Replacement Sticker? It'd be a fairly large silver sticker (maybe 4"x6") with a diagram of the Timing Belt and a space to write the mileage and date of the TB change. Aftermarket belts may not come with a sticker, but the Volvo belt does.

If unsure after all the inspections mr mudd, replace it anyway, the garage that done mine, changed belt and not tensioner, when they were told to do so,,,, end result,,BANGGGGG? whoops. it cost them 1500 uk pounds to repair.

Default UPDATE!!

I called the dealership this morning and YES the timing belt was replaced at 104k. The service guy reassured me that the car had very good records and had undergone all the prescribed maintenance.

Thanks for all the feedback on this thread.
