Not sure what my son did, but the rear door lock mechanism has locked with door open, so that we cannot even close the door(hits the striker)

Try inserting a phillips screwdriver into the door latch where the striker woulod be if the door was closed. Pull on the door handle and push the screwdriver inward (toward the car). That should open the latch and let you close the door as normal.

So what did you do to fix it? Not all of us readers are mechanics, we learn from others!

Kind of embarrassing;
Wife calls me out early in the morning on her way to drop the kids to school, screaming " I can't close door, taking the pilot" She gets kids transferred and locks the Volvo with the key fob, I come out with screwdriver to release the lock, not know the car is centrally locked and can't for the life of me figure out why the locking mechanize won't just flip like all normal cars. I think this must be some kind of advanced Swedish safety engineering and jump on the forum for some trusted help. After my cup of coffee, it dawns on me car must be locked, go out, unlock doors, pull handle and flip lock with screwdriver.

Exactly what my wife has done multiple times. I showed her how to correct it and left a flatblade screwdriver in the driver door pocket for her convenience.

Unhappy my passenger door will not latch on my volvo S90

Recently I have discovered my rear door was locked from the inside but can be open from the outside. Well this passed Saturday I was sitting in a parking lot and my door came open on its own. The door would not latch at all until a hour of playing with the lock! But then again it came back open and then latched. This has never happen to me before and I am scared to even drive the car because of the rear passenger door might fly open! can anyone please give me some ideas it would be very helpful for me! thanks alot

Check the child proofer switch on the edge of the door. There should be a sticker. Cycle it back and forth a few times and test it in the position you wish to use it. Double check the door from the outside.
You didn't say which year, so I looked up an '97 S90, it's different on later models. https://www.customers.volvocars.com/...S90_037.htm#37
