Default Remote control programming

Need a little help, I am trying to understand this system. Have a 98 V70, no remotes when I purchased the car. I wouild like to buy a remote and get it programmed. I understand i need a 9166200 remote and the dealer needs a four digit code specific to my vin from Volvo to program the module in the car so the module can see this remote. Is this correct? Once the mechanic has access to the module, (is this what the 4 digit code allows) they clear the old remotes and press the buttons on the new remotes so the module can see them. Is this correct? If this info is correct, has anyone tried to clear the remote codes from the module in other ways. I am just thinking that there may be other ways to do this on the 98 V70. This year seems to be an odd duck with this remote. Does anyone have info on this, any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forun Padrea.

You may as well bite the bullet and let the dealer do the job for you. The price may seem high, but that is the cost of security and a job done well.

I had my remote done for my '98 not long ago, but it uses the 9166199 remote, same thing as yours, I think, but doesn't have the panic button. The code is looked up by the dealer based on your VIN, and then they have a computer they plug into the car to program it for the remote. Can't be done, from what I understand, without this computer, and as far as I know, only the dealer can look up the codes for the '98.

edit: btw, was about $35 or so, iirc, to have the programming done. Bought the remote used.

I caved in and went to the dealer, the first one told me i needed a software update and programming, about 140.00 to 160.00 per remote, went to another and they programmed the unit to the remote for 35.00, wow it pays to shop around. No software was needed for the 98 as I suspected, and the 1 hr labour at the first dealer turned into .2 at the second.

Thanks all

My Directv remote control rc71h, either control my Samsung tv model, LN32C450E1GXZA with the code 54000 or control my DirecTV box with 981 code but not both. I need to control the volume, on and off function on my tv and the DirecTV channels with the same rc71h remote control without changing or reprogramming the remote control. How can I accomplish this, I need a different code of business etiquette training. Thanks
