Default SRS Module No Communication

Hey all,

Been trying to track down an issue with my v70. Sorry for the long post. I would greatly appreciate any help/info you could provide.

When I bought the car, the info screen on the dash had all garbled illegible text, no biggie, I reflowed the Motorolla chip on the back and the screen works.... but displays an SRS warning. Unsure if it was there prior to reflowing because it couldn't be seen.

Pulled codes from the SRS module, 00D0 and 00D1, missing buckle signal on both drivers and passenger side. Ok fine, checked the resistance of the buckles at the harness, 5M ohm on both, that's good (I think?). Same 5M reading at the CEM harness, so wiring is good. The codes would not erase from the module.

Talked to a seller on eBay who does Volvo airbag module resets, said these are 'hard' codes and the module would need reprogramming to clear them. So I sent the module off to them. Received it back with a note saying "Could not be safely reset". Reached out to them, they said their computer couldn't communicate with it....

Plugged it back into the car, and yep no communication to my scanner, and in fact, now the car doesn't start when it's plugged in (I always unplug the battery when removing any wires or anything of course). Seems to have a code for the fuel pump module when the airbag module is plugged in, preventing it from starting. Starts fine without the airbag module. Also the drivers door master switch stops working when the module is in. There is also a number of modules that are missing from the auto scan when it is in (I don't know if they are there when it's unplugged, I forgot to check).

Modules missing from autoscan with airbag module plugged in:
Airbag module
Electronic Accessory module
Audio module (car has an aftermarket headunit)
Phone module
Road and traffic information module
Steering angle sensor module

With the airbag module plugged in, the CEM holds 2 codes: SRS module missing (A51) and AUM missing (A59). Without the module plugged in, I know there is a code for the AUM missing (again bc of the aftermarket headunit) and DDM missing, along with others (forgot to make an exact list when with the car).

I figured the SRS module may have gotten damaged in shipping or maybe they broke it and weren't taking blame, so I did some research and found that they arent VIN coded and that buying a replacement with the same part # would work fine. So I ordered a used one with the same part number and a 2001 date code. I received one with the right part #, but a 2014 date code. Upon installing it in the car, it acts exactly the same as the old module did (no starting, door module dead, no communication with the scanner, etc).

At this point I'm at a loss. I have traced a lot of the wiring, all seems to be ok. It's entirely possible there is a broken/shorted wire somewhere since this car was a giant mouse nest for 3 years with the previous owner. I took apart the CEM to check for water damage, it all looks perfect from what I could tell. Not sure where else to go from here. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks a ton if you read this whole thing.

Hi terminator,
all numbers have to match with exception to inception date but even that has to be with in months.
The best way is break it down. Your year model engine size awd or fwd turbo or non turbo, automatic or manual trim pkg. all these have to match then be with in a few months of inception and your golden. No programming or reprogramming. It’s plug and play. Personally I wouldn’t go the yeabay way. Sounds like they just send what’s on the shelf wasting everybody’s time and $. The best way is to become an auto salvage yard bird or ask someone who has vast experience and expertise in these matters with access to several salvage yards. Knowing what to look for is half the battle making sure it a good pick testing it is the other half. I tried a 2000 V70 R most of the numbers matched it worked I could clear the codes from it and the CEM but the other modules came up with codes stating SRS not configured. Close but no cookie. The SRS module That worked for me was out of a 2001 V70 xc awd 2.4T with automatic transmission. It was plug and play cleared codes on it and CEM and Bam! All cluster lights and messages gone still to this day. Have any questions im around

Teewaah,

Thanks for the reply sorry I didn't see it till now. I have an update on this!

Turns out my shoddy soldering job on the Motorolla chip on the gauge cluster resulted in a couple jumped pins which I guess was connected to the CANBUS or something. I took the dash apart again, cleaned up the extra solder, and everything in the car started working again. The door locks started working, the issues with the fuel pump disappeared, no issues communicating with the SRS module, all is great!

Not sure what happened really because the airbag module company said they also couldn't communicate with it, so that's just weird because after fixing the dash the second time I used the original SRS module and it works great. Very strange thing that happened but I thought it would be good to leave the solution here in case anyone else makes the same mistake. You know the weirdest part? The first solder job fixed the LCD so I figured it would have been ok! Guess I messed up the perfect set of pins to fix the LCD but interrupt the CANBUS.

Anyways thank you!

Default SRS: module / cluster panel repair fixed

Thank you for update Terminator,
I’ve done a few cluster panel repairs they are not easy. Same goes with early steering angle sensor repairs. Stoked you figure it out. I always have to reset SRS codes when I pull a cluster panel with out disconnecting the battery. So that makes sense that your cluster was causing the SRS module no communication issue. I’ll have to file that one away for future reference.
