Replacement keys

Hi all.
I have just moved to the USA from the UK and bought a 1998 V70. My car only came with one key (and remote) so I am looking to get a 2nd key (not too worried about the remote). I went to Lowes and they managed to cut a key for my wife's Mazda, but didn't have the ability to do a Volvo one.
I rang the dealer and they want $65 + Tax to get a new one. In the UK we can get them cut in the high street for around $10 (at least I did for a 440 Turbo I used to own and this key looks the same!). Can anyone tell me if that's just not possible in the US for Volvo keys, or is the dealer trying to pull a fast one? If so, I might wait until I take a trip back home and get a few done!
Thanks for any help,
Richard

Could you try another hardware store ? They do not always carry the same blanks. Had to go to two places last time I needed a key... Ace Hardware perhaps?
Also, google shows many online sources for Volvo key blanks - one in the UK even. Could you get a blank and find a local smaller hardware (perhaps better customer service) to cut it?

Karl,
Thanks for the info! Having just moved to the US I have no idea where to go for these sorts of things, it's all a bit of a culture shock, I need to find out what shops sell what things... It's really helpful to know that I can get the blanks though, I'll keep looking around.
Thanks very much again, I'm glad I don't have to spend $130 + tax on keys (one for my wife's key ring and a spare) at the dealer.

I'm not sure, but it the '98 keys are anything like the '01, then the keys have a chip inside, that is programed with a code your car recognizes. I went through the same ordeal trying to get a spare for my car when I bought it. The tech at the key shop had a tool which indicated wheter or not the key was chipped. From what I've read, $65 is a decent price per key.
Good luck!

The 1998 was not a chipped key.
The chipped key came out in 1999.

Justin,
your 01 has a chip, but do you also have a key fob. I know that some cars simply use RFID in the key and there is no extra fob. I am pretty sure there is no RFID in my 98V70t5, though it is possible--and certainly would be a cool thing to add to the security.
