Default Shift lever sticking in 'P'

Hello,
I have a 1998 V-70 XC AWD auto 2.4 turbo. The car runs very well, is up-to-date re service and maintenance, and I keep on top of many of the 'usual' problems for this model at this age. Recently, however, the shift lever will not come out of 'P' about half the time unless I depress the 'Shiftlock Override' button, in which case, it shifts normally. This problem occurs as much at first start-up as it does at at any given time during a run of errands, when the engine is being switched on and off frequently. Obviously, I am depressing the foot brake when moving the shift lever from 'P'. Once out of 'P' when I have used the 'Shiftlock Override' or not, all the other shift positions can be selected normally and smoothly. Driving the car short or long distances, fast or slow, I have no sense of any problem with the transmission. It seems to be working perfectly.
Any ideas?
Thank-you.

It's an electric switch interlock. Troubleshoot to find what's not functioning properly.

Not sure this is what you're describing, but I have same 98awd and the button on shifter sticks preventing shifter from leaving park position, or completely engaging in park position (both happens). I manually fiddle with button until it engages. Common problem. Easy fix but haven't gotten around to it yet.
