Default slam that tailgate

Anyone else have this problem? I have a 1998 V70 that you have really got to slam the tailgate to get it to latch tight! I am getting nervous about braking the tailgate off.

The tailgate is like any other door; if it's too tight (or too loose) then adjust the latch...

I do on my 99. It is much worse in cold weather and around 0 degrees is nearly impossible to latch completely without warming the interior of the car first. I inspected it and found that the plastic pieces covering the latch components inside the door have all cracked and begun separating from the metal parts. (This is visible without removing anything) As a result, they bind and especially so when subjected to frigid temps. I priced a new latch assembly at around $400+ and decided I could live with the problem.
