Default Strut Bearing going bad?

How can one tell if the front strut bearing\mounting is going bad? I have a '99 GLT that the upper seat on the pass side is bad. I am going to replace both sides with the HD ones from IPD. Figured while I was in there should check the mounts. Car has 120K miles and handles good. Just slight clunking going over bumps and the top of one of the struts turns easily. I know the end links have play in them so they are going also. Thanks

You can feel for excess play. I have only ever replaced 1 in 10 years.

Thanks Tech - I took the strut assemblies out and both strut bearings had play in them. In fact, the sound they made as I moved the inner part was exactly what we were hearing when driving the vehicle. Install of the seats and bearings went smoothly and the clunking is gone. Take care
