Default Stupid Strut Question

Does anyone know if on the Blue box genuine Volvo struts (like p/n 8612887) made by Sachs it is normal for there to be absolutely no rebound? I can pull the piston out by hand and it will stay pulled out and I can push it all the way in and it will stay completely compressed with no rebound at all. Is this normal ? I ordered these from a Volvo dealership and they were shipped cross country to me. I need some help here as I've never replaced front struts before.

Default shock

I am not an expert BUT I have replaced many shocks in on my cars for about 40 years now. I would say the shocks are bad, You should have to fight to push the shock down and it should slowly move back up. Go to your local auto parts store and play with some of the shocks and you will see what I mean. Some tire stores have displays on how a shock should work.

Default OEM V70 Sachs Struts - Super Touring - are oil, not gas

I called up the technical expert at ZF (who make Sachs) and checked and on the genuine Volvo front struts - Super Touring - there is no gas charge. They are oil pressure struts without a gas charge and the strut piston will stay where ever you place it. It will stay fully extended if you pull it out and conversely, will stay fully compressed if you push it in. There is significant resistance in either direction - it's hard to pull out or push in - but it will not pop out like a gas charged strut.

On the rear shocks the oem equipment by Sachs does have a gas charge but the front struts do not.

Also, FYI, just to really confuse the issue, Sachs uses the "Super Touring" nomenclature for other manufacturers' cars such as BMW, and these struts are gas charged.

I hope this clears things up.
