RE: tailgate locked shut, won't open
Is it?
My own failed twice last week, but it appears to have been something sticking. I removed the rear trim and was able to get my hand down behind it to open the lock from inside the door, to find that it worked perfectly for about a week before failing to open again. Nothing that I can see is broken or worn, yet periodically it fails to open from outside. When this happens, the remote fob doesn't have any effect either so it's not the outside handle, but I think more of a remote electrical problem. I'll try changing the relay. I certainly wouldn't fork out on a new lock mechanism until I've identified that's the problem. Any thoughts?

You can buy a tail gate lock at FCPGroton.com. I just did for my 99 V70. Mine started off working intermitently, but I did not take care of it in time. When the tail gate was up it would work, but if it was down it would not. I had several wires that had snapped and a bad ground wire. The wires lead through a harness to the tail gate, and if you open and close a lot they will eventually snap. Anyway after I had the wires repaired, the lock jammed and it seems it was one too many jams - at least it was jammed on open! I ended up getting the lock replaced; bought it at FCPgroton for $139 + shipping. (Price depends on lock/chassis number.) I also ended up getting the back door bolted, after one too many repair kits failing to keep the tail panel in place.
Hope this helps.
