Default tilt wheel lever broke off

I have a 2001 v 70 with 87,000 miles on it. I went to adjust the steering wheel this afternoon and the plastic lever that locks the wheel in place broke off in my hand. It broke very close to the steering column and I'm unable to turn it at all to lock the steering wheel from either tilting or telescoping. I did not apply excess pressure to the lever. I've tried turning it with pliers, etc. with no success. Any idea short of taking it to the dealer to keep the wheel locked in place? Thank you so much.

If it's anything like my '98 S70 (same thing happened to me) then you'll have to pull the dash to install new lever.

Thanks so much for the reply. I was afraid of that too. There is no room to do anything there. As a temporary fix to keep the wheel from flopping up and down I put a small wooden block under the steering column and that somewhat adds some stability. Again thanks for the insight.

Whoa!? Your wooden block fix sounds pretty scary!!

Don't know if you're a DIYer or not but pulling the dash isn't that difficult; especially if you allot yourself plenty of time. I did mine in half a Saturday. If you've never done one, figure on a day or two.

Here's tech's write-up on dash R&R; think this is for pre-1999 S70 but it should be pretty close to yours..

Wow! That stinks. On the 960 you can reach under the dash, take out a screw and slide a new one on.

Again I appreciate the info about pulling the dash to get to the lever replacement. Unfortunately that is far beyond my skills. I just met a fellow locally that has had some success with reasonable volvo repairs at a foreign car garage in a nearby town. I think that I'll drive over in the next few days and see what they say. Again thanks so much.
