The 2.4 l 5 cyl engine in these cars is what is know as an 'interference' engine. If the timing belt breaks while the engine is running the pistons contact the valves. This is usually going to result in bent / broken valves at a minimum.
You can do a lot to a free car and still have a great deal. What year is the car? What condition is it in otherwise?

I just noticed your user name was V70 98.... so I guess it is a 98. That is what I have also (for a couple days now). Severalfolks on this forum believe that the 98 was the best year for the V70. While I have spent most of the time I have owned mine working on it, I am impressed with the build and engineering of the car so far.
