Default Timing belt help

I am new to this site. I have read all the past timing belt questions however I bought my car without a timing belt on it with bent valves. replaced the valves and I have 3 possible marks on the crank pulley that could be the mark. I have not seen a repair manual that points out which of the 3 marks on the crank sprocket is the correct one.

Can someone help me. The engine has the variable valve timing FYI.

I have put the belt on to the one I thought it was. at idle it was great. started to drive and it started backfiring. I pulled the belt off and moved it to the 2nd mark drove it. seemed ok however the engine light came on. I do not have a scanner and Have no way of checking it right now. I may go buy one tomorrow.

Thanks for the help.

I know it is hard to see it exactly like the picture but those are the marks you need to use.

Yes it does. Thank You. Is it possible to bend the valves if the crank sprocket is a tooth off and driven?

Nope 1 or 2 teeth off is usually fine.

Default runs got new problem

Thanks for your help. I must have been paranoid. I reset timing today and it runs fine. I drove it and heard what I thought was a backfire like before. I thought no way! I drove a bit further and then I realized that it was the right front strut bearing was bad and the strut top was making a "pock" noise that sounded just like the engine was backfiring.

Oh well runs great now. Thanks.

Now I reset the ECU and the first time I start the car the engine light does not come on. The second time I start it the engine light comes on with a p1655 CVVT code. Do you have any suggestions on where to start?

Thanks again

Keith

If the timing is dead on it could be either the VVT valve on the top of the cam cover or a cam position sensor.
