Default Tranny repair on a 2001 and 2005 v70.

I am looking at a 2001 that needs a new tranny. The dealer said he would have the unit "rebuilt". Aside from that the car seams perfect.

I also looked at a 2005 with a "rebuilt" tranny too. The dealer on the 05 said he paid $1700 bucks. That seams too cheap for a fresh tranny.

Are these "rebuilt" trannies OK? Can a 5 star transmission mechanic handle rebuilding these things or is a factory new tranny the way to go?

So.......a super clean 2001 2.4T with 111,000 miles and a rebuilt tranny for $7000?

Or

A pretty clean 2005 2.4NA with 150,000 and a rebuilt tranny for $9,000.?

I'm hoping a new tranny and a ETM rebuild by XeMODeX will produce the vehicle I am after. Darn Volvo.....making the perfect wagon yet dropping the ball on reliability.
Thanks in advance for any shared knowledge.

Chris Montgomery.

The 05 with the $1700 tranny sounds more like some kind of fix. From what others have posted, all the transmissions are rebuilt units and I seem to remember them in the 4-5 thousand range. I have no personal knowledge or experience. I would think the 01 with the ETS redone would be a fairly reliable car. I can't even guess if the price is fair. I did a quick search and 11.5 to 6 was the range on 01's with around 8.5 to 9 the average with 100-120K miles. The seach I did was nation wide.

Thanks checksix.

The independent dealer will have the 2001 ready later this week.
I need to read more about the "stop neutral" software upgrade. I wonder if that upgrade is included in the new tranny install on the 2001. From what I've read...the stop neutral function needs to be disabled as soon as possible or the tranny will repeat the same pre-mature failure. When I take it to Turner Volvo for an inspection I'll irritate them with questions. LOL I want an extende warranty too so,,,we'll see they they can do there. How much is the Volvo extended warranty anyway? $2000 for five years perhaps? If it's in that price range I'll go for it.

So....the 2001 with a new tranny with stop neutral software upgrade and one year warranty is sounding good to me. The ETM is still under warranty (10 yr/200,000) from Volvo. Aside from steering racks and sensors galore failing......I could get another 100,000 out of the 2001.
