Transmission Fluid Color - To change or not
I have read many of the posts on the V70 transmissions and wheather to change (not flush) the fluid or leave it alone because it (the fluid) is too far gone and my be keeping the transmission form slipping, etc.
History: My particular automatic transmission appears to have the beginings of the valve body issues as it shifts hard and with a delay between park and drive and park and reverse. Volvo has looked at it and says it is still within spec but it shifts hard to me. When it shifts through the gears on the road it does so without clunking or anything. Sometimes it feels a little sloppy but nothing else. It has 95,000 miles on it right now.
My question is how to know wheather to change the fluid or not. I have attached pictures of the existing fluid next to new out of the bottle Modile 3309 fluid. The pictures show fluid that is about 1/2" deep, then soaked on a paper towel, then the residue in the cup after draining.
Any help or comments would help.
Thanks,
Brent

I had similar issues with my v70 2.4t,
I flushed the transmission and it fixed my issues,
after about 20-25K km the issues kind of return so i flush it again and all is good for
another round.
I would say that you fluid is shot, its burnt good, i would either drain and fill a few times or flush, with 95,000miles, thats nearly 160,000km i would most probably drain and fill a few times...flushing has issues with dislodging burnt oil deposits in the tranny and causing more damage drain & fill is a more gentle approach.
Its up to you. some people on the forum swear by drain & fill others by flushing, i have had sucsess with flushing. i also use an additive in my transmission called lubeguard it seems to do a good job.
Good luck

Success!
last week I changed the transmission fluid using Mobile 3309 (bought from the local petrolium distributer, $100.00 with tax for 2 cases) and added lube guard. I used the kit and instructions from IPD. It was simple and efective. I noticed an imediate improvement (not elimination) in the shift delay between park and drive/reverse as well as an improvement in the harshness of the shift.
After that I had both CV axles replaced which actually improved the feel of the transmission significantly. This took away the sloppy feel I mentioned in the first post.
