Turbo?
This'98 V70 Turbo Wagon supposedly ran like a top until it started smoking like crazy all of the sudden. There is oil in the intake pipe, so the owner thinks it's the turbo. He says thereis no oil in the coolant and it does not overheat. It looks great, so assuming the mechanic confirms all of this, I am considering buying it as a project. He wants $1500 for the car with 160000 miles so I don't know how good that is. Assuming a bad turbo, would anyone recommend removing the turbo all together and running the engine without it? This would be my first Volvo so I don't know what I'm getting into.

1. Like you said have your mech look at the turbo and also everything else on the car. Get it checked and see what all is wrong with it.
160,000 miles is a lot but for $1,500 something could be pretty wrong with it.
2. If it is the turbo either have it rebuilt if it can be and or find a junker car with the same turbo on it and rip it off and install it on your car or purchase a brand new one from Volvo.
3. No do not run the car without the turbo. To do this I am sure you would have to do other things to the car to make it run properly and it would just be easier to rebuild and or source a used turbo or brand new turbo.

Is the V70 an AWD model if it is then your in for trouble because you can't get to the turbo in the all wheel drive model. But having said that this is what I did to my turbo>>>>>>
Your oil return line from the turbo to the engine block might be clogged with oil coked up inside it.
I removed the top oil line, theoil feed tube, and then drained the engine oil. After everydrop of oil drained out I tookseveral cans of carb cleaner and sprayed it into the turbo. If you have someone helping you have them watch the oil pan drain for the carb cleaner draing out mixed with oil, you will definatley know the difference, 1. because all the oil drained out and stopped dripping and now that you spraying in cleaner at a moderate amount of pressure it is now draining out. 2. It looks completly different from engine oil. It takes a few minutes and you have to really get the tube from the cleaner into the turbo. You also can change drain pans, 1 for the oil and 1 for the cleaning of the turbo so you can check the draining of the carb cleaner for white coked up oil deposits. You should have some white deposits mixed with the carb cleaner and oil. Now put everything back together and refill engine with synthetic oil 10w 30 mobile 1 and go for a drive, it should take care of the smoking problem.

I have a 1999 AWD s70 which is a turbo model. I can plainly see the turbos heatsheild and I can remove it as well to access the turbo.
