Default Typical Water Pump life 01 to 07 2.4L

Before I get **** about replacing things, do the water pumps in the 01 to 07 2.4L engines typically last the life of the engine, or is it a good idea to replace it while I have the timing belt off? A decent one is about $80, but I don't want to replace it unless I really have to. If it's not leaking or making noise, I assume it's ok.

I was just wondering.

I have seen some go out at 60K and others go out at 140K.

What happens when they go out? The gaskets/bearings go bad?

They usually leak. I have seen a few with the bearings bad.

We're planning on taking a few road trips with this car next year. That's why I'm being a bit paranoid with all of these parts being swapped out. I figure it's better to be safe now then be stuck in the middle of a desert with a broken belt or bad water pump later.

Any brands I should stay away from? I'm finding 4 or 5 different brands. I even found a couple for $30 and under. I don't know about that. That seems too good to be true.

If I have no noise or no leaks on my current one, would you say it's safe to just keep it, or would you replace it if it was you? I'm just asking the expert since I have never seen a water pump built into a block before. It's more money I don't have for this job

If it were me I would leave it alone.
But thats me and I could have to changed out fast if it goes bad later.

I guess the best question is can you change the water pump without having to remove the timing belt? Can you just slide it on and off the new and old ones or do you have to go through that re-aligning process?

You have to remove the belt to replace it.

I'm trying to minimize costs so I'm just going to keep what's on there right now as long as I don't see any surprises when I have a view of it. Most of the dirty coolant has been flushed anyway so it should be fine for a long time (positive thinking).

Hummer,

I didn't see you post the mileage, so not sure if you are to the timing belt change out you mentioned or not. From other forums, it seems the general rule of thumb is to replace the water pump every other timing belt change. One other note is they also recommend the belt be changed around 90K miles instead of the recommended 105K miles for V70's. Thus unless you are near 180K miles, my recommendation is to let it be.

Thanks. I have 75k on mine right now and will be changing the t-belt this weekend, along with the pulleys and tensions for everything else. I have had zero problems with cooling. I'm actually impressed by how well the cooling system works. Even under extreme driving conditions and heat, I have never seen the needle pass the half way point. The radiator also seems to be very anti-corrosive. There is not one spec of corrosion on it.

This car is turning me into a fan of the brand.

I checked the water pump out. No leaks and it looks like new. I wonder if it's been replaced before.

It doesn't make any sounds also.
