Default V70 2001 J Hose Replacement

any suggestions to make replacing the J hose easlier? To small to get a hand in the area on a '01 v70 T5. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello, There's a great writeup on the "J" hose replacement over on brickboard. I know because I wrote it. Here's what you do (or at least what I did). Raise the rear end at the vehicle's left side. Use jackstands and chock a front wheel. Remove the LR wheel. Remove the nuts and drill out the plastic rivets which hold the plastic fender liner in place. Remove the two nuts (or is it bolts) which hold the little sheet metal bridge which spans the "tunnel". It's a small piece but it will prevent the exhaust system from swinging down when you do the next step. Remove the two large headed bolts from the rear muffler's hanger. The exhaust system will simply pivot to the ground. The flex-joint has enough flex to allow this. Now you can look at the charcoal canister. You'll see the "J" hose running along its side. The contour of the hose is there to hug the side of the rectangular plastic box (charcoal canister), nothing more. Cut the 2 hose clamps, remove the bad "J" hose, replace with regular Ideal (screw, worm) clamps. One thing I did was loosen, not remove, the canister's mounting screws on the bottom side. This provided enough movement to get a better angle on things. The only odd tool you need for reassembly is a "Pop Rivet" tool suitable for the plastic rivets used in the fender liner. I found plastic rivets but you could use aluminum. It's a simple enough job. You're removing a wheel, fender liner, 4 bolts and you're there. My "J" hose was $26-after I asked for a discount. Use Anti-Seize on the bolts upon reassembly. Smile when you think of all the money you saved. Kira

Hello, Yeah, I know. I left that part out because I figured if you got that far you could find a way. I used a small (1/4") wood chisel to simply cut the steel band. Wasn't the feel and smell of a new "J" hose odd? Kira

Default v 70 hose repair

Thanks George and Kira, the write-up was very helpful. I originally had a PO 422 code come up. What I found in moving the muffler was that once you get the heat shield out of the way you can reach the J hose and sure enough it had a crack by the clamp that I repaired by first wrapping the hose with teflon tape, all I had, and then covering the whole thing with epoxy. After the repair, it required the 1/4-3/4 full tank before it would go through the evap cycle. (one full day of driving and letting it sit overnight. Also bought a new gas cap. Stant $3.99 on Amazon.)
