V70 AWD angle gear

V70 AWD angle gear
Last summer I was getting a loud whirring sound when I started driving my 1998 V70 (53K miles) at low speeds. I also had the check engine, ABS, and Tracks Off lights on. The dealer told me that the sound indicatedthat I needed a new angle gear. The constellation of lights indicated that I needed a air pump, and ABS module. The repairs would cost more than $4000. I was told, too, that I would not have to have the repairs done right away, and that I could still drive the car without causing further damage, but without an new air pump the car would not pass inspection, wihout a new ABS module I would have no ABS, and without an angle gear here would be no AWD. Well, this week I had the ABS module replaced and the air pump at a local service station and saved $400 off the estimate I was given for those at the dealer. The service station used genuine Volvo parts for both. Well, now when I drive the car I do not hear this whirring sound. Could it have come from the air pump and not the angle gear, as was told at the dealership? Can anyone tell me how I can know for sure that the angle gear is defective?
