hi

i have just purchased a 1998 v70 awd auto estate with 140000 mls and full service history. when i get above around 40mph the car over revs as if it is not getting in to 4th gear. the engine always seems to be overrevving and on a few occasions has stalled as i slow up. the engine management light come on and stays on for a day or so then goes of for a day or so with no particular pattern. any suggestions would be welcome as i dont know where to start

Hello, Is there a "W" button which has been depressed? That or a linkage problem could keep the car in 3rd gear. See if the previous owner heeded the manual's advice against changing transmission fluid. That would be bad. How long have you owned this car? Give the engine and transmission a close look-over for any loose hoses or wires. Take your "new" V70 to a dealership and register it with Volvo's database. You can then ask if transmission and/or ETM updates have been downloaded. It would be a great time to have one of them drive it. Where did this car spend the last 12 years? Kira

thanks for the reply, the problem is the same whether the "w" button is pressed or not(the orange arrow come on and off when i press the button). i just bought the car last week in a private sale and the seller informed me that the car was great and had absolutely no issues but as the car was sold as seen i have no recall(as such i dont trust any info that they supply) they informed me that they had the car for 3 years and it has had 3 previous owners before them. i am going to try and get the car booked into a local independant garage that i trust tomorrow and see if he can shed on light on it but any suggestions in the meantime would be helpful which i can pass on to the mechanic..
