Default Very stiff gas pedal

Hi all, I'm the proud owner of a '98 V70 as my first car. First thing I noticed was that the gas pedal is fairly hard to press- so hard, in fact, that my leg got tired within minutes of driving. It also feels like it grinds a bit when it comes back up, and definitely sticks a little. Is there any way for me loosen it up or clean it? I know very little about this but I'm eager to learn, so any ideas would be much appreciated.

I would try cleaning the throttle body and lubing the throttle cable.

Okay, I've managed to find the replacement part for the throttle cable here. I can probably figure out how to replace it on my own, but I'd like to try cleaning the throttle body and lubing the cable first. Where exactly is the throttle body? Is it underneath the plastic cover that the throttle cable goes into?

Nope
You need a new throttle cable assy.
Not too much (cost) and not too bad an install and you will be AMAZED at the difference!
You will be able to depress the gas pedal with a finger
You can try to clean it but the gunk gets way inside the cable, and it's not cleanable
Most are/have become very stiff now at 13-14 years old

Hello again, can anyone point me to a tutorial or the like on how to replace the throttle cable assembly?

Smile Stiff gas pedal. Not caused by cable but pulley springs.

Hi I am a new member but old Volvo fan, My first was a 1959 544 when I was 16. Since then many others, 122 145 many 240's curently 1990 740 wagon 16 valve and a just purchased 1998 S70 with 186000 miles.
I love this S70, very quick and comfortable.
What brought me to the forum is the stiff hard to press gas pedal. I read in another forum to replace the throttle cable, I was about to do that when I thought I would try some wd40 on the cable before buying a new one. when I detached the cable from the pulley I found that it moved quite freely. I decide to disassemble the pulley actuator (see photos) to see if the springs could be adjusted because they seemed too strong. There are two springs, a large spring and a small inner spring there is no adjustment, the spring position is fixed. I removed the small inner spring and re installed the pulley and cable and it now feels like a normal gas pedal.
