Volvo tailgate sensor and intermittent alarm problem
Hi,
I have a 2005 V70. I have a few problems and I'm assuming that they are connected.
Occasionally I get a tailgate open message. When I check, the tailgate is closed tight. I open and close it again and that tends to clear the message. However I have seen it flash on and off while driving also.
The other problem is that the alarm goes off for no reason. Sadly this tends to be at 3:00am
I can't see the tailgate sensor so don't know how it works? (mechanical switch?)
This all started when I was on vacation in France and let the battery go flat. Not sure there is any connection there, but thought it was worth mentioning.
Any suggestions?
Regards

I'm getting the same thing. I get a message that the tailgate is open, I check it and make sure it's closed but the message remains. Also, the alarm goes off intermittantly - at night, middle of the day, whenever. Hopefully someone out there can provide some insight into the root of the problem.
Thanks...
Thanks...
Had same symptoms with my car last year, tailgate open message (when closed), random alarm trips, tailgate open message showing up while driving.
My problem was broken wires in left hinge area of tailgate. Constant flexing of wire breaks them in the tailgate wiring harness. I had about 6 broken wires, some wires completely broken but still touching (most of the time) in wire harness bundle. Depending on which wires are broken you may also see problems with the rear wiper motor, top brake light strip, rear window defroster or tailgate license plate lights.
There is also a micro switch in the tailgate latch that could potentially cause the tailgate open/alarm problem but I would first suspect broken wires, especially if you see any of the other tailgate related problems mentioned. Only one wire is associated with the tailgate open/alarm problem.
Alarm goes off because of open circuit to ground caused by broken tailgate wire or bad micro switch in tailgate latch. Alarm monitors all doors, hood and tailgate, if any are opened when alarm is activated then a switch opens the circuit to ground and alarm goes off. The broken tailgate wire or micro switch are causing an unwanted open circuit.
I've also read the tailgate is closed circuit also goes through a glass breakage sensor, which is a wire in the tailgate window (defroster? not sure) and there are connectors that plug into this wire in the window and can come loose when the tailgate is slammed. My car does not have these connectors but yours may and I not sure if the connector is visible or under the tailgate interior panel. This would be another tailgate open circuit problem if the connectors come loose.

The wiring diagram I have shows the tailgate anti-theft sensor wire as pink. This is the wire in the tailgate wiring harness. Make sure you've looked at the wires in the hinge area carefully and far enough back from the hinge for any stress breakage. Breaks in the wire can occur further away from the hinge area then you would think. Also check the wires going to the glass breakage sensor in the tailgate window (not all cars have this), I did read the wire connection to the window can cause come loose and cause alarm/tailgate open problems. The glass breakage path is part of the tailgate anti-theft circuit path along with the tailgate latch micro switch. My 2001 didn't have the glass breakage sensor.
I would suspect the micro switch in the latch last but it might cause the problem. Doubt this switch could be purchased from the dealer separately. You have to disassemble the tailgate latch to get at it. It's possible you could purchase the switch from an electronics supply place or get the whole latch from the salvage yard.
