so johnny what do you think about Actron CP9185 Elite Autoscanner Diagnostic Code Scanner With Live Read, Record and Playback Capability For OBDI and OBDII Vehicles?
My mechanic has it, i tried using it and it wasnt too hard, but as soon as he came, he took it out of my hands telling me its incredibly expensive equipment while i found a great deal on Amazon.com

Just a little FYI they started OBDII in 1994 then 1995 cars. But the OBDII would only read engine codes and nothing else.
The 97-98 V70 whilst it has an OBDII looking diagnostic socket, actually uses the volvo FCR
protocol and requires a vol fcr devicce to read and reset codes
I am still looking for an economical solution to this as I have a lambda light on which on checking on three different scanners(for OBDII) shows no code stored, I have also had the car checked on the emissions computer in the garage (twice) which showed all was well, the car also went through the MOT without a problem, it runs fine.
if you do a google search for VOL FCR you will come up with various bits of info on the software needed to view what is going on www.ilexa.co.uk sell the software (for your laptop) about £100 you also need a cable to connect, rs232-iso-obdII/vagcom/alfaDiag KKL interface I cannot find anything other than a demo download for this and am waiting for a cable to come before I can check it out, the demo does not allow you to reset any codes or the service light though, you have to buy the full version!
But, I believe that you should be able to retrieve the flash codes from that socket (ie similar to 850) so if anyone knows which pins to connect to to retrieve which codes and what they mean that would be really usefull
This is one of those situations where volvo had got you until ilexa brought out the software
but ilexa explain more on their site
hope this helps to point you in a direction which makes sense

Well I got the cable I mentioned in my last post, a vagcom type, for the grand sum of £1.99 plus postage from ebay via hongkong, working on the basis that if it didn't work it is not much lost, however, it does work, the software with it provides drivers/set up options and if you have a vw/audi software to scan the codes(not a lot of help for a volvo but it tests the connection) Scan tools software was not good however the demo version of Volfcr I also mentioned, does work, as long as you configure the usb port as com1, being a demo version it is restricted, however, communication is extablished, I originally wanted to see what the cause of a lamda light was, and guess what, as my V70 is a 2.5 10v non turbo, it has the fenix 5.2 system which is not covered by this software (glad I didn't buy it), but it does inform you that you can make up a flash code reader to get the stored codes, works like the 850 under the bonnet one, also for the phase2 motronic system, I got the details from this site www.volvoforums.org,uk/showthread.php?t=46943 , back to the results in a minute
the Vol fcr demo software allowed me to read codes for the ecc, which showed up ecc414 a temp sensor faulty signal, which I knew about and had resolved, abs checked out ok, srs checked out ok, immobliser again ok, locks and alarms gave me the left ultrasonic sensor internal fault, interesting but thats all, autobox again ok
so it seems that it works with most things except the engine management, so made up the flash code reader, and read the codes, nothing happened with it connected, ign on or off
so with on, dipped into No5 (you need to have read the thread as above) and codes began to come out, 123 coolant temp sensor signal absent or faulty (that made sense and I could explain it) and 323 which I couldn't find in the fenix 5.2 list of flash codes, but in the motronic it is malfunction indicator lamp signal faulty ! I followed the procedure for clearing the fault codes, which you have to do immediately after the code has finished flashing
and now my lamda light is off.
At least now I know I can pull the important codes if something reappears
and the VolFcr software does work for me also. BTW my V70 is november 1997 registered
oh, and whilst it should be obdII compliant, it isn't which is why the 3 garages which hooked up generic code readers got no code stored.
I shall try the scantools software on another vehicle when I get the chance just to see what happens
Conclusion? it took a while to get there and it took a lot of thread reading on various forums to piece together all the facts which are often well hidden, about a year ago I asked autotap if their system would work on my car, and they replied, No, I asked the same question to a generic code reader supplier who also said no, at leat they were honest
