Will the center console cup holder actually hold anything?

Will the center console cup holder actually hold anything?
In my 2000 V70, I have device that pulls out from the center armrest. It has two openings in it that suggest they will hold a beverage container. I have tried various types of cups and bottles, to no avail. What is up with that? Do you have to buy some special Volvo mug or something for this POS to hold anything? I thought for sure that a newer Volvo would have a beverage holding device in a decent location that would perform its designed function. I guess I was mistaken

Yes they are pretty bad, plus they break frequently if you actually find a cup able to fit in it. Not quite as bad as the overly engineered ones in BMWs but for a car that I find well built in almost every other way the cupholders are definitely terrible.

For years Volvo refused to put cup holders in their cars, and people were not buying them because they didn't have cup holders. Then I think they must have put that piece of crap cup holder in as a joke or something. It will hold two 12 oz. cans, but not anything much bigger than that. We have two tall thin Thermos stainless steel looking drinking cups that we use. The hold about 16 oz each. In the 94 we just shoved the drink between the drivers seat and the emergency brake handle and that held better than the crappy cup holders they put in the later moldels.

The first time I put a cup in the cup holder it almost jumped out after hitting a pothole. Thank you Volvo, you have helped me kick my pop habit, by having such a crappy cupholder. I hate to admit it, but my 96 GPS (Great Purple Slug) POS minivan has about 15 cupholders and they are all bad ***.
