Default Park assist pilot - proximity alerts and auto braking?

Volvoers,

I recently drove a dealer loaner 2019 XC40 with the Park Assist Pilot feature enabled. Arriving at home from the dealer, I decided to test the feature's ability to parallel park on the street in front of my house. After enabling the feature, I was instructed to place the car in reverse and take my hands off the wheel, which I did.

However, I did not know (the car was a loaner) that I was expected to control the gas/brake during the parking maneuver. The car began the accelerate in reverse and the steering wheel turned. Within a fraction of a second, the vehicle had jumped the curb and impacted a tree on the side of the road.

During that entire time, no proximity alerts/alarms sounded to indicate we were about to hit an object. And no emergency braking was activated to avoid the impact. Is this the expected behavior of the vehicle when using this feature? Luckily nobody was injured, but we were really surprised (and startled) by what seemed like obvious missing capabilities (impact warning and auto-emergency-braking).
