2015.5 T5 intermittent rough running
Hello, I'm the owner of two Volvos. First came an '04 XC90, then I decided I liked that one so much I got myself a newer 2015.5 XC60 with the little 4 cyl turbo engine for the newer electronics and better gas mileage.
The 2015 XC60 has one issue that is becoming tough to avoid and figure out... at times I can feel the engine running a little rough but the car gets down the road just fine. And usually it will idle okay as well. However, sometimes when at idle and the rough running starts (at the same time the AC compressor cycles on) it can hiccup the engine to shut complete shut-off. Then I have to move the shift lever to P to start the car up again. When the outside temp is in the proper range to allow the start-stop system to work properly, this doesn't really cause much problem... but with heat at over 95+ degrees every day lately, the problem has become very apparent.
I have Bosch code reader and during these shut-downs I do occasionally get check-engine codes. So far i've had the 0172 (rich fuel mixture bank 1) and 0455 (bad fuel cap)
The volvo dealer first thought the issue was the start-stop battery as it showed it was at 45% life, but that did not change anything. Then I got the 0455 code and went to get myself a new gas cap. That didn't solve anything either.
Has anyone else had an issue like this and can shear some insights? Thanks in advance for any help!

P0455 is saying you have a large evap system leak. While a loose gas cap is a common cause, it sounds like you have a separate issue such as a bad vent/purge valve or an issue with the carbon filter or a hose in the evap system. Did the dealer check out that code for you? its seems plausible that the issue with the evap system could cause issues with with fuel trim...(ie fix the evap system and your fuel mix code resolves.)

The 0455 CEL code came later, after I had already gotten a previous dash display that specifically said there was a problem with the gas cap. Since the issue lingered after I got the new gas cap, I'll be making a service appointment... This is great info. Thanks again.
Okay, I've cleaned the mass air flow sensor, checked for cracked hoses or plastic fittings, changed the air filter, and changed the fuel filter... Car goes into the shop tomorrow.
I thought I had the problem solved by swapping the air filter, but then realized that the test drive I did to verify was performed at night and first thing in the morning. The car ran fine. However, the problem starts up again when the temperature outside gets over 90 degrees and/or whenever the auto-start/stop system gets disabled due to high heat outside. It seems the car runs at it's best (idle and under load) when the auto start-stop is within operating temp range.

I know this thread is an old thread, but was this issue resolved? If so, please let me know what fixed the issue. I'm having similar issue with my 2015.5 XC60 T5. My mechanic has tried changing the spark plugs, ignition coils, and BG GDI fuel/air air induction service to resolve the issue. All to no avail. Was having issue with my engine oil trap, which was replaced. That seem to have helped a little but still getting an intermittent low rough/stuttering idle. My mechanic and I are at our wits end trying to figure out what could be causing this issue.

How about the throttle, when was it cleaned last?
My rough running was solved by cleaning a not so dirty throttle, but a small ring of carbon around the valve was enough to disturb it
Thanks so much for the response. The only code being thrown is related to the thermostat, which that's a problem in itself. That code is P0597.
I'll definitely let him know about cleaning the throttle. I think he mentioned that there was a little carbon build up, but not enough to cause issues. I'll tell him to clean it regardless of the amount of build up.

I got the T6, I couldn't believe it also, but that small carbon ring around the butterfly valve of the throttle made it run real rough and even shut off.
My expert Volvo mechanic showed it to me and told me thats the problem, cleaned it well - car runs perfect since.
Not sure if your T5 got same thermostat as my T6, but the ones on the T6 tend to break internally and cause problems as well
