2022 XC60 Starting Problems
I have become extremely disappointed in my 2022 XC60. Between the software issues (where is Android Auto), support from both the manufacturer and dealer, and other issues, this purchase has been one of the worst buying decisions I have ever made.
We went for a quick lunch at noon today. Left the restaurant after 45 minutes and tried to start the vehicle in the routine fashion (it had been turned off properly before exiting). Nothing that except all the interior panels lit up, seats moved, mirrors moved, etc. No starter motor sound, etc. Did multiple things that the manual suggested and nothing worked, but eventually we found an error message stating that the key was not detected, as well as a message stating the ignition was already on. Well, technically these are conflicting messages because in order to turn the ignition on, the key needs to be detected. Obvious software conflict. I swear that they had a bunch of chimpanzees as their software designers.
The Volvo help people (800 number - my app could not connect to their server) asked me first to place the car in Neutral and I told them that it couldn't be done without turning the vehicle on, and so they then said - OK we are calling a special tow truck for you to take the car back to our dealer (which of course is not open on Sundays while all of their competitors are).
Has anyone else had similar problems? I know others have had all kinds of problems such as their displays disappearing, etc. Is this a new one (we just installed the new software update a couple of weeks ago)?

Had a somewhat similar issue with my 2022 V60 Polestar a day after picking it up. Started the car, then it ended up after about ~ 5-10 seconds in "not started" mode, cycled through this a few times until it was "started" but no gear indication was available (e.g. no N, D, B). Turned it off again and then it finally started but had the check engine light on and a message about a problem with the "propulsion unit". Apparently this is a known issue for this model (but they sold it to me anyway) and the fix is via software in 2-3 weeks.
One of five issues I've had in five days of ownership. The regret on the purchase is real.

Picked up new car, 7 days later it’s on a tow truck, likely to be held for two weeks waiting for software update. Can’t begin to tell you how disappointed we are with the brand!
The car was driven and parked for a short period, say 10 minutes. On arriving back, we tried starting the car as per normal but did not start. The dash showed no errors or indicated anything.
We called Volvo Roadside, a general technician was sent with no updated knowledge of the vehicle and how to manage it. It was the same result with the tow truck driver. So 7 hrs later it’s on the truck!
When Volvo says they care, how far does that actually extend!!
We love Volvo based on previous ownership, so this is gut wrenching for our family!
The dealership has no news to date, I’ll keep you posted!!

I suspected this starting thing would be more widespread since the same driveline is used across the Volvo lineup. I've left mine at the dealer as I don't trust it. Weeks until this software update is ready. I opened a customer care case directly with Volvo two days ago and zero word back. What a train wreck.
I thought the mods felt this was a duplicate post because I later found a similar thread with the title "2 day old XC60 won’t turn on." So I posted on that as well.
Long story short, I discovered the problem we encountered occurred to some owners after the most recent software update as per the other thread and on another Volvo forum. As I stated in a follow-up on that thread, we got our vehicle back from the dealer and of course it was a software issue that was discussed on "XC60 won't turn on" thread and the one on Swedespeed forum. The fix was as others indicated - they had to disconnect the 12V battery of the car, wait several minutes and then reconnect. The system then rebooted just like any computer does. I believe they did a couple of other things as well. This solved the problem. It is called a system reset, basically a computer reboot but slightly more complicated than hitting a reboot button.
But we think they may have also uninstalled the most recent update because the vehicle is acting like it did before that update. It has some hesitation/lag when depressing the accelerator when the hybrid motor hands duties off to the gasoline engine prior to the update. The last software update had fixed this for us, but apparently caused the vehicle starting issue. Apparently the Volvo software engineers just can't get things right. My wife is so upset, she is now afraid to drive the car anywhere for fear of getting stranded and I don't blame her. Volvo has just lost a customer and we are now on to searching for non-Volvo vehicle. The introduction of this new system has been a major clusterf*** and I am wondering if the premature introduction of the new system was influenced by the Chinese owners of the company.

How do I join in on the Customer Care complaint let's move to a Class Action Lawsuit ....
My adviser working on the car stated he'll have answers for me tomorrow. The car has been with them since yesterday at noon. They're running diagnostics. I am not the brightest pencil; however, my sharp mind says- It does not take 24 plus hours to run diagnostics.

Jaim7: FYI Volvo Customer Support has been completely useless. I feel like I'm getting the gaslighting run around from them, e.g. they are trying to hide they have a serious issue. Literally *zero* acknowledgement they just sold me a car with a very significant, known issue (failing the start). Complete self-own for the brand... I can sort of understand if an owner has the car for a year and some bad issues come up that the response will probably be slow. But someone who's had a car for a week, or less... Seriously baffled that some Volvo USA person isn't actually concerned about this!

I walked into my dealership with 29 Technical Service Bulletins and 3 Safety Recalls. They have left the ball in my court.
I'm very thankful Grapevine Grubbs Volvo of Texas is not putting blinders on.
They truly are ethical and moral in their efforts to make this right.

It looks like this is about a month old. That literally just happened to us today. My wife went out to go to work and nothing. She thought she left something on and the battery was dead. Newer cars don’t really do that anymore. I came home from work and it acted like it but everything was lit up well, lights worked, etc. I called Volvo dealership and they suggested to try to jump it. I attempted that, nothing. I check the battery, 13.5 volts. The said it could be the secondary battery so I called Volvo Roadside assistance. During this 4 hour wait, to truck still isn’t here I put a trickle charger. It states 93% full, 13.9 volts. Still nothing.
As far as contacting main Volvo, good luck. Right after we bought the Volvo, I like to go over everything. So, we took out the spare tire and noticed 3 dried baby mice. Under the spar I noticed mice dropping. Digging around in the back wheel wells, both sides, mice nests were going on. I pulled out the back seat and under the back seat mice droppings and urine spots. Not a lot, but some. So that makes sense on the odd odor we have had since we have had it. I have always owned US domestic vehicles so I thought it was just how the car smelled, I didn’t care for the smell but it wasn’t overly pungent. So, I attempted a few tomes to call and email Volvo customer cart wanting to know how mice can get inside a new car and I don’t appreciate buying a new car with rodents already in it. Further I was concerned that there may be existing damage and once rodents get into a vehicle it is hard to stop. I have tried multiple time of contact and after two months, still not a response. After speaking with Volvo service department, we were thinking that this may have been existing damage from the mice. While I have been waiting on the towing company I started researching and discovered the issue this morning is not a new problem and has nothing to do with the rodents.
Love the Volvo, hate the customer service. I agree, class action lawsuit needs to possibly happen. There is no Volvo we care; it is the worst customer service I have ever dealt with. The dealership has 40 cars in its fleet and it is a week and half out to get a loaner. What does that tell you about quality? Which has nothing to do with the dealership, they have been great so far. Because of the lack of response over the free rodents they gave me and how they can get in, I have pondered getting rid of the Volvo, Now, with this issue and other experiencing the problem, yah that is high on my list getting rid of it. I have never owned an unreliable vehicle and I won’t.

7/5/2022 My wife bought a 2022 XC60 Inscription B5 about 2 weeks ago. Today, she found the vehicle was totally dead. The FOB wouldn't work. She went off to work in her 2004 Lexus 330RX with 210K miles that has never given her a problem and left me to solve the XC60 issue. I called Volvo Roadside Assistance. The representative walked me through how to open the car with a manual key and he had me try to start the car. It was completely dead. This all took place at 7:30 am and I understand the tow won't be here until 12:30 pm.
We talked to a serviceman at the dealership and he said "sometimes the vehicle doesn't shut down completely after sleep mode if something is left on." But nothing was left on... so... more to come after the car is shipped off to the dealership.
Has anyone had this problem?
7/6/2022 Car arrived at dealership and slid off the ramp and hit a parked. Now there is bodywork damage that needs to be assessed as well as the other problems. I texted Roadside Assistance and asked them to get the pictures of the damage that the driver took. No response. Nearing 11am. I haven't heard a word from Roadside Assistance or the dealer yet.

Ours acted dead but it was not. After a week in the service department it was a quick fix. You have to pull fuse C30, I am not positive, I don't have the paperwork with me. Pull the fuse, wait 10 minutes, put it back in and start it. They also said disconnecting the battery and backup battery and waiting over 10 minutes will also do it. They said they seen this one other time. It also needed some updates that had to be done by the dealership. They were going to charge us $380.00 and decided it was a warranty issue that stemmed the problem. A FYI, updates are not covered by warranty. So your android glitchy system that you are still working out bugs are not covered by warranty? I guess there is also no way to get it in neutral or take off the parking brake so watching your car get dragged is a nice thing to observe. It took about 7 hours for the tow truck, 6 days to get back from the dealership, and no loaner/rental car because they have so many Volvo's getting repaired.
have emailed Volvo headquarters once a week since May 5th, US and international, multiple email addresses and not one response. As soon as this chip shortage gets cleared up and the Grand Cherokee Overlands or Summits get the air ride suspension back and a few other features or Mercedes gets some of their features back, I think I am getting rid of it. Love the car, nice looking, comfortable, collision safe, but the worst customer service you could possibly deal with.
Imagine if its freezing outside or extreme heat and you are way out of town? Sitting for who knows how many hours waiting on a tow truck on a vehicle that is unreliable. It's a scary thought. Or you are in stop and go traffic, a light, stop sign, etc. and the engine shuts off in eco mode and doesn't start back up?
Good luck. I personally think a class action needs to be put against Volvo, at least we all need to start contacting the NHTSA.

My---this sounds just like one of the many electrical issues I've had with my new Volvo XC 60===I've had that "hesitation/ag when depressing the accelerator two of the six times it's been in the shop. And to think I turned in a perfectBW X5 with 17000 miles on it for a car that I don't trust. A friend wants to drive to dinner tonight in Manhattan beach, and considering it's been in the shop six times in 1450 miles, I told her maybe we'll get there but there's no guarantee we'll get back.
It crapped out on me on July 4th weekend too just as I was leaving for Palm Springs and i had to rent a Hertz car for the weekend ...
I had a previous XC 60 ten years back and loved it----but this one----has been a total disaster.

Hi everyone,
Like many of you I WAS the proud owner of a brand new XC60 (keyword: "was"), loved the car, amazing interior, etc. - that love quickly faded when my wife and I were about to go for a hike and luckily I decided to get gas first, minutes from our house. I filled up, sat back in the car, turned the ignition and nothing. Same failed to start problem as everyone else.
Took roadside assistance the better part of 4 hours to get a tow truck out to me (in a major metro city). Car had to be dragged on and off of the tow truck.
My car has been at the dealer for 52 consecutive days now with absolutely no end in sight. Volvo Service has two parts on order which I'm pretty certain won't fix the issue. They want to replace the starter motor and the alternator, both of which are backordered with no ETA. Actually one part is supposedly on the way but "stuck in customs."
When I call Volvo Customer care they never have updates. The only thing they say is your case is under review. My case being that ive now asked for Volvo to purchase the car back under the lemon law after 30 days of it being at the dealer. Here we are at 52 days now and "management is still reviewing your case." "Thank you for your patience." "We don't have a timeline for how long it takes to review a case."
I'm losing patience fast. I don't know if I should hire a lemon law attorney or if I should ride out this "Customer care case" (or lack there of).
Volvo is paying for a rental car because they had no loaners to offer. Enterprise just called yesterday and said we needed to update the contract because I've had their rental car for so long. Enterprise also asked the mileage of the car to make sure it didn't need an oil change by now. Laughable, I know.
Volvo also sent me a check for two of my car payments, both of which came and went. I had to put in a new request to see if they will continue to make those payments while I don't have my sub 4,000 mile car. It's a joke that I even have to ask. The saddest part is that first payment on the car was made a few days after it was picked up by the tow truck. So every payment on the vehicle has been made while it has been in for service.
Has anybody gone through a buy-back with or without an attorney for this generation and model car?
If so, how long was the process? Was there anything that helped move it along? Do you have any advice?
By far the worst purchase I've ever made in my life. This is my first and last Volvo and I can confidently say I will STEER every possible person I know AWAY from purchasing ANY Volvo until Volvo actually starts to resolve my issue.
Sincerely, RegretfulXC60Owner

Yes! This happened to me a couple weeks ago after 2.2 was installed. I sat waiting on the phone (SOS Button) for help from Volvo for 20 minutes while I constantly turned the ignition button. It finally turned on. This car is a horror story! I was mad at my last bmw for being so unreliable so I bought this Volvo. This car is even worse...

I have a similar issue. My XC60 developed an issue over the past 12 months where I have to hit the lock/unlock repeatedly to get into the car. Then it indicates the key can’t be found. I have to turn the start **** a bunch of times and sometimes lock/unlock using the remote to get it to start. Only happens below about 30 degrees F.
Last year, the dealer updated the software, and replaced both fobs. They claim they’re limited under the warranty based on what Volvo will authorize. Sounds like they’re going through a troubleshooting script, but completely ignoring the issue of the cold. The software obviously doesn’t care what temp it is, and I keep the fobs indoors. The car works fine otherwise.
Agree, horrible customer service from Volvo. I’m guessing this is something with a connection in the car, and the cold contracts everything and caused the issue. They’ve thus far refused to try replacing anything that might actually fix the issue. I just scheduled service again, and I’m fully expecting we’ll be back at the beginning and they’ll reload the software and replace the keys. Hopefully there’s enough cold weather in Jan and Feb to ensure they can see the issue enough times to fix the “low cost” things that clearly aren’t related, and actually get to the real issue.
Great car, otherwise, but Volvo is lousy. I don’t know how much better other manufactures are…I kinda wonder if they all are just lousy.
Anyone ever heard of this?

I just scheduled service again, and I’m fully expecting we’ll be back at the beginning and they’ll reload the software and replace the keys. Hopefully there’s enough cold weather in Jan and Feb to ensure they can see the issue enough times to fix the “low cost” things that clearly aren’t related, and actually get to the real issue.
Great car, otherwise, but Volvo is lousy. I don’t know how much better other manufactures are…I kinda wonder if they all are just lousy.
Anyone ever heard of this?

Has anyone had any luck getting resolution from Volvo for this?
I purchased a brand new 2023 XC60 in September 2022. My first volvo - drove nice and looked nice. I thought it would be a great vehicle.
ISSUE #1: About a month into owning it, I left the house to pick up my daughter. I THOUGHT I grabbed my key fob (turns out I didn't - continue reading). I arrive to the destination and turn off the XC60. Once my daughter is ready, I go to start the car and it says key not detected. I check my picket and the center console for my key - it's not there. I'm baffled how the car started in the first place, but after attempting to start it a few more times, I call my wife to come with her key. She starts coming, but can't find her key and asks me to check the drivers door. Sure enough her key is in the drivers door handle. The car didn't recognize it until I took it out and then it started. Now I never even knew that key was there (and mine was left at home) - it worked to start the car when I left the house, but didn't work to come back home.
ISSUE #2: Today, I went out and ran a few errands with the key in my pocket as I always do. I run the errands, which includes stopping and restarting the car twice. I arrive home and park the car in the garage. About an hour later, I go to leave again to pick up my son. I still have the key in my same pocket. I get in the car, hit the brake and turn the start ****. The consoles turn on like the car started, but it never started. No attempt to turn over, no errors, no warnings, etc. I try a few more times to turn it off and back on. Same thing - consoles all look ready to go, but it's not started. I get out of the car, lock the doors with the fob, unlock with the fob and try again - same thing. I was in a rush, so took the other car and left. My wife tried with her fob after I left and it started just fine. Once I was back and tried with my fob again, it worked fine too.
I also just had this into the shop for a software update that had to be done at the shop. So everything was updated about 2 weeks ago.
Looking for advice here as I would love to just give this thing back to Volvo at this point. I can't trust it. I'd rather drive my 2016 Infiniti as that has never left me stranded (well once, but that was my fault for not testing/changing the battery).
