Default Fueling / tank fill up problems / gas pump

I hope someone can help me. I am a good shade tree mechanic but my 2015 XC60 has a problem I cant solve and neither can the dealer or independent shop.

The car will only take gas during a fill up very, very slowly. I mean basically a trickle otherwise the gas pump will shut off or gas will spew out of the filler neck. I have this problem consistently regardless of gas pump, gas station, way I hold the nozzle, believe me, I've tried everything. I have tried all lengths of nozzle insertion. Holding at 5 O'clock, 7 O'clock, upside down. Problem has been duplicated by the dealer and independent shop. This has been going on for a year now.

The tank is definitely not venting but I cannot figure out why causing fuel vapors to escape are out the neck, which cause fuel to splash back and shut the pump off.

Also, no codes are present.

So far, I have taken it to the dealership and an independent shop. Both say I need a new gas tank. I have run a bore scope down the neck and there are no obstructions, replaced the vent filter, blown out the vent lines with compressed air and read countless forums.

Both shops have told me there is a valve inside the tank that "could" be the problem and it is built into the tank. Total cost for a new tank is approaching $3k parts and labor.

Does anyone have any other ideas as to what the problem could be or how to fix short of replacing the tank? Does anyone have a complete diagram of the tank and all the hoses/vents going to and from?

Sorry, I just got my car, but for my Porsche, there was a fuse that controlled the vent valve. Not sure if this is the case for Volvo. I would check fuses 62-64 just to be sure.

thanks for the reply, I have found that link previously in my searches and am using it in my ongoing diagnostic. That is the best diagram of the system I have found so far. Since my original post, I have:

checked all fuses - all are good
pressurized the tank with air from the filler neck. It holds more pressure than I thought it should but not sure of where the relief valves are or how much pressure it is designed to hold when car if off.

My next step is to remove the two vent hoses that run along the filler pipe and see if there is anything blocking those. Specifically, the little hose in group 9 in the picture and there is another vent hose that has a filter on the end of it that is not shown in the below diagram.

I had a similar issue with another vehicle. The mechanic took an air hose to the little vent line, blew it clear and that fixed the problem.

I hope you are able to resolve your issue as cheaply and easily.

does anyone know how the little connector where the metal vent hose connects to the plastic vent hose disconnects? Seems like it should squeeze together to release but I couldn't figure it out and was afraid to break it. If someone knows what it is called, I can google it for info as well.

All, I wanted to revisit this post as my car has been fueling better recently, like a normal car. Unrelated to the above, we were recently getting low battery warnings so I decided to replace the battery. I took the old battery out and between taking old one out and putting new one in, I took a break, had some lunch, etc. Since I put the new battery in, the car has been fueling up like a normal car. I have no idea what was changed or even if this battery change process solved it but regardless, all is working normal now and has been for several weeks. Just thought I'd post in case helpful to anyone else.
