Default Help: Recommended engine oil

2016 XC60 Special Edition T5, manual said,
4-cylinder engines only: Volvo oil VCC RBS0-2AE/SAE 0W20 is recommended for extreme driving conditions. This oil must never be used in 5- or 6-cylinder engines.

However, their website now recommended 0W20 for all XC60, I wonder if I should stick with 5W30 or swap to 0W20? I looked up under the hood, the engine does have 5 plugs, so I believe it's a 5 cylinder engine.

Volvo has changed the recommendations in some cases. If you are unsure of the engine, you can either do a VIN decoder or look for a sticker (usually on the timing belt cover) that will have a code that will read something like B4204T5 which decodes as B= gasoline, 4 cylinder, 2.0L displacement, 4 valves per cylinder, 5th generation turbo.

You can also google for technical service bulletins or try this forum tool: https://volvoforums.com/forum/tsb_recall/tsbs

Given there is a known issue with oil consumption for specific 2016 models, I would suspect there may be a corresponding update to oil recommendation. If in doubt, call a dealer's service or parts department.

Thanks for the info. However, I am certain my engine is 5 cylindars, but my doubt is if the new recommendation of 0W30 will override the warning for 5 cylindar in the manual, what's the reason the manual says "This oil must never be used in 5- or 6-cylinder engines".

I wasn't questioning whether you have a 4 or a 5 cylinder - just sharing how to know which specific engine you have since in the past, Volvo bulletins have been applied to specific engine codes. As to whether to follow the manual or not, keep in mind that was written back in 2015 or so, and the point of the service bulletins is to update dealers and customers about any changes to their recommendations. To note, I had a similar experience with my VW where they spec'd a 50K service interval for the DSG transmission oil/filter but sent a subsequent bulletin to lower that to 40K miles based on their real world findings. I guess the easy button is simply to call the dealer and ask what they'd recommend.
