Help removing CV axle 2011 xc60

I'm getting that clickity noise from the front driver's side area. Figured it's the CV axle so I bought a new one.
I can't get the ball joint to separate from the knuckle. I've removed the tie rod and the sway bar link. I've removed the bolt that attaches the whole assembly to the end of the driveshaft. When I put my pry bar in between the control arm and the knuckle I'm only able to seperate them so much before it feels like i'm bottoming out. It's been a few years since I've replaced a cv axle. Am I missing something? Should I just drop the control arm?
Any input would be greatly appreciated!
